International expansion of the satellite company of EIF student Julián Fernández

Published by Raúl García Hémonnet

He combines his telecommunications studies with co-directing the company FOSSA, which specializes in creating resilient communications networks through satellite constellations.

Julián Fernández launched his first satellite, a picosatellite, at age 16, while in high school, with the support of the URJC's CAT (Cultural and Technical Training Center). Today, at 22, he develops satellite constellations to ensure Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity at his telecommunications company, FOSSA.

He's currently combining his studies in Telecommunications Engineering with the development of an ambitious project: "launching a constellation of 80 satellites to connect the planet using IoT," says Julián Fernández. To this end, they've raised €10 million from various investors.

FOSSA is a company with the URJC seal, meaning that one of its founders is a student at the EIF, and its 50 employees include students and faculty from the Rey Juan Carlos University.

In addition to this major project, Julián Fernández's company has sold satellites to international clients such as Microsoft. "We have civil clients to whom we sell a connectivity service for all types of assets," explains Fernández. FOSSA is the Spanish company that has launched the most satellites into orbit.

FOSSA has presented several projects with the support of Rey Juan Carlos University, and Julián Fernández wanted to thank Julio Ramiro, professor at the EIF and current Vice-Rector for Students, Employability, and Entrepreneurship, for his support.

Julián Fernández plans to complete his engineering degree while co-directing FOSSA, although his priority now is the company. "I work 12 hours, I have to attract more investment, and I meet with international clients." He plans to finish his degree because he really enjoys it.

An example of excellence emerging from the classrooms of the URJC that stands out in one of the most rapidly developing economic sectors.
