Last Friday, the Rey Juan Carlos University held an inclusive writing workshop in collaboration with the Asociación Lectura Fácil Madrid. The activity, part of the II International Congress of Clear Communication and co-directed by the professor of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Ricardo Vizcaíno Laorga, was taught by the social educator and writer María Peralta and attended by teachers and students from the different degrees of the university.

The workshop highlighted the history and importance of easy reading, a format that simplifies the information in texts in order to make them accessible to people who live with reading difficulties that already affect one in three Spaniards.

Peralta admitted that adapting documents is not a simple task, but stressed that it is “a necessary action” to break down the barriers to universal access and understanding of information.

In addition to the educational activities and projects, the social educator introduced the reading clubs she sets up to help people read in a simple and understandable way. Using adapted books, the groups, led by librarians and therapists, read aloud and share interpretations and activities.

The workshop concluded with a practical application of what had been presented. The participants, in groups, adapted texts of a literary, journalistic, political and legislative nature to convert each of their letters into inclusive words.
