Professor Raquel Abalo writes about diabetic gastroparesis and Cristina Martínez, URJC Nursing graduate, ninth place in the EIR exam

The FCS professor, Raquel Abalo, was commissioned by the Spanish Diabetes Society

Raquel Abalo, Professor of Pharmacology at the Department of Basic Health Sciences and Coordinator of the High Performance Research Group in Physiopathology and Pharmacology of the Digestive System (NeuGut-URJC), is the author of the article entitled "Alteration of gastric emptying in diabetes" .

The article addresses the relationship between gastroparesis or gastric stasis and diabetes. Gastroparesis is the term used to define slow gastric emptying (heavy digestion), in the absence of mechanical obstruction. This alteration affects 25% of patients with diabetes and diabetic gastroparesis is thought to be an underdiagnosed disorder. You can read more about the clinical manifestations and therapeutic strategies here.

Cristina Martínez López, from the 2017-2021 promotion of the URJC Degree in Nursing, achieves an excellent position in the EIR test

The EIR exam (Nurse/-Intern/-Resident) It is the system through which nursing professionals access specialized training after completing their undergraduate studies.

In this test, Cristina Martínez López got ninth place in a call in which more than 5000 nurses applied.

Since she began her degree, Cristina was clear that she wanted to be a midwife and she set herself the goal of a good study routine. From her point of view, “the keys to being successful in the EIR exam are organization and, above all, CONSISTENCE. It is essential to know how to prioritize and synthesize, and leave room for rest and social life. You have to take special care of your mental health during the preparation, know how to disconnect and surround yourself with people who support us”.

For Cristina, it has been a tough year full of weekly challenges, but according to her, “with good organization you can achieve what you set out to do”. In addition, she adds that, “you have to trust in yourself and motivate yourself to achieve your goals. Dreams are not fulfilled like the years, dreams get up early, work, study and fight. And yes, although it may seem difficult, give everything time”.

Finally, this passionate nurse emphasizes that the words collected here only show her own experience. In this sense, “each one will have to adapt the study to their personal circumstances, resources and objectives, without forgetting that an exam does not determine how good a nurse you are or how much effort you have made to prepare for it”. She is very clear about it and encourages anyone who is considering it to specialize, since, according to her, she says, "we have to continue training and evolving as a profession, and this is achieved through the power that knowledge gives us."
