Students with specific educational support needs
The Unit's main objective is to ensure that members of the university community (students, teaching and research staff, and technical administration and services staff) with any type of disability or special educational need have the same opportunities as other individuals to pursue their university studies or perform their work.
Services
- Individualized support, providing reasonable adjustments, curricular and access adaptations.
- By providing reasonable adjustments, curricular and access adaptations, and individualized support, the Unit ensures that students with disabilities have access to inclusive, quality education, removing barriers and promoting equity in learning, ensuring that students, regardless of their disability, have equal opportunities to learn and participate (SDG 4: Quality Education).
- The Unit actively works to eliminate barriers that generate inequality in the university environment, promoting equal opportunities and the full participation of people with disabilities in the academic and social life of the university. Its work is key to combating discrimination and fostering an equitable environment (SDG 10: Reduction of Inequalities).
- The Unit promotes the creation of a university physical and social environment that is fully accessible and equitable, reflecting the principles of sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities).
- By promoting an inclusive and supportive environment, the Unit indirectly contributes to the mental and emotional well-being of the university community by reducing the stress and anxiety associated with barriers and discrimination. An accessible and supportive environment promotes holistic health (SDG 3: good health and well-being).
- By helping to facilitate the pursuit of university studies, the Unit significantly improves the employability opportunities of people with disabilities, enabling them to access decent jobs and contribute to economic growth (SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth).

- To investigate the barriers (physical, attitudinal, pedagogical, technological) faced by students with disabilities in the university environment and the factors that facilitate their academic and social success (SDG 4: quality education).
- Investigate the effectiveness of reasonable adjustments implemented, collecting data on their impact on student academic performance, participation, and satisfaction (SDG 4: Quality Education).
Objectives
General:
- To be a fundamental pillar for the university to fulfill its social responsibility and actively contribute to the 2030 Agenda, building a more inclusive and equitable society.
- To be a driving force for building a more just, transparent, inclusive, and democratic university (SDG 16: peace, justice, and strong institutions).
Specific:
- Design and implement personalized curricular and access adaptations (methodological, evaluative, and resource-based) for each student who requires them.
- Provide the necessary human support (sign language interpreters (ILSES) and support assistants for people with reduced mobility).
- Coordinate with teachers the effective implementation of individualized reasonable adjustments in the classroom.
To achieve its objectives, the following are proposed:
- Periodically evaluate the effectiveness of reasonable adjustments and the services offered, using user feedback for continuous improvement of the process.
- Establish fluid and efficient communication channels with faculty, departments, vice-rectorates, and other university units for effective coordination of services and units.
- Promote collaboration with external entities (NGOs, associations, and companies) to enhance the range of services and opportunities.
- Implement continuous improvements in the accessibility of the web and digital resources.
- Conduct awareness-raising campaigns aimed at the entire university community to promote respect for diversity and the elimination of stereotypes.
- Develop continuing education programs for teaching and research staff (PDI) and technical management, administration, and services staff (PTGAS) on any type of disability and special educational need.
- We seek to create flexible and accessible learning environments for all students, regardless of their abilities or learning styles. “Universal Design for Learning (UDL)” and inclusion strategies.
- It is essential that the Unit work strategically and collaboratively with all areas of university social responsibility (USR) at Rey Juan Carlos University. This interconnectedness not only enhances the Unit's impact but also extends the principles of inclusion and equity to all facets of USR, thus achieving a truly comprehensive, inclusive, and transformative university, and contributing to a more just and equitable environment for the entire community.

* The registration/renewal period for the Unit for the care of people with disabilities and special educational needs will remain open until November 20th (inclusive)Students who have not submitted ALL the necessary documentation to formalize their registration/renewal of registration before that date will have to wait until a new application period opens to access the reasonable adjustments corresponding to their disability and/or educational need.
