Last Friday, November 21st, we held the international seminar "Climate Smart Urban Development: best practices evidenced by final results of EU SmartWb Project ONLINE International Seminar" at the Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences of the Rey Juan Carlos University, where the impact of the SmartWb project was presented and how representatives of the productive sector have perceived these results.
Following the presentation of the event by Carmen de Pablos Heredero, leader of the work package responsible for modernizing undergraduate and master's degree courses within the SmartWb project, Professor Milan Gocic of NIS University in Serbia presented the results of implementing over 29 undergraduate and master's degree courses at universities in the Western Balkans. He also discussed the platform developed to share experiences and project results among participating European universities, partner countries, Western Balkan universities, and industrial partners. Professor Genti Qirjazi of the Polytechnic University of Tirana provided detailed information on all project dissemination activities undertaken throughout its duration. Professor Marija Jevric of the University of Montenegro, and general coordinator of the SmartWb EU Project, presented new collaborations, projects, and doctoral theses directly stemming from SmartWb that have contributed to improving sustainable urban development in Montenegro.
Furthermore, an interesting debate took place. Moderated by Professor Miguel Blanco of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FCEE) and a researcher on the SmartWb project, the debate focused on the University's contribution to businesses through the SmartWb project. Participants included the SmartWb project's industrial partners: Nikola Perović, OZON Montenegro; Nataša Stanišić, ACE BH, Bosnia and Herzegovina; and Kejt Dhrami, Co-Plan, Albania. The debate highlighted the benefits of the synergies created by University-Business collaboration in this project. The results of the implementation and impacts of the modernization of subjects in more than 29 degrees and master's programs at Universities in Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina and Albania were presented. In the meetings we were able to learn from the presentations of Professor Harsha Ratnaweera, from NMBU, Norway, and Professor Martin Oldenburg, THOWL, Germany, about how to manage water in a more sustainable and efficient way. Professors Miguel Blanco and Carmen De Pablos from the Faculty of Economics and Business at URJC have presented a successful master's thesis case entitled "The identification of key success factors and challenges for the implementation of car sharing business models in the Republic of Croatia," defended by Marita Matic in the Master in Business Organization at URJC. This work aligns with the project's objectives, demonstrating how to involve students in European projects to apply the knowledge they acquire, aimed at providing solutions that improve climate sustainability in different contexts. Emina Hadžić, a professor at the University of Sarajevo, has presented the initial results of the implementation of the 29 modernized undergraduate and master's degree subjects. Sadmira Malaj from Polis University in Albania has shown how the project's results have improved the skills of the teaching staff. Marija Jevric, professor at the University of Montenegro and general coordinator of the project, has described how, thanks to the project, the laboratory infrastructure has been improved and state-of-the-art equipment has been introduced in the universities receiving the modernization. Hasimin Keçi, a professor at the European University of Tirana, has presented the technological platform for collaboration generated through the project and its uses. Professor Merima Šahinagić-Isović from the host university, along with the team from Bihać University, have shown how the project has allowed for a stronger partnership between universities and industry, and has fostered better and more internships for students in companies. Professor Genti Qirjazi of the Polytechnic University of Tirana explained how the project has spread and helped to raise awareness about policies and community participation in sustainable urban development from a climate perspective, and Nikola Perovic, OZON's representative in Montenegro, explained how the project has helped the sustainability and innovation of non-governmental organizations in the countries benefiting from the results. The URJC has been responsible for the modernization of the courses in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences NMBU in Norway, the University of NIS in Serbia, the Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe in Germany, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Austria and the University of Zagreb in Croatia. A round table discussion coordinated by Professor Željko Bačić was also held on the ERASMUS+ CBHE calls: Trends and experiences. Professor Milan Gocić from the University of Niš, Serbia gave a final synthesis of the project and presented ideas for future projects that would constitute a continuation.
We extend our sincere thanks to the event organizers, Marko Ćećez and Merima Šahinagić-Isović, and the rest of the team at Dzemal Bijedic University Mostar for their warm welcome and the planning of these extraordinary social events. At URJC, we are proud to be part of this project, which has yielded such significant results and provided us with so much valuable learning from shared experiences.
