The Scanning Electron Microscopy Unit provides microscopy analysis and sample preparation services using different approaches and techniques. A laboratory for sample preparation is also available.

It is based on scanning with voltage-charged electrons to bombard the surface of a sample to obtain an image. All types of samples can be observed as long as they are properly treated. Various accessories are available for the treatment and observation of samples under high temperature, high vacuum conditions and their associated detectors.

Available equipment

The unit has two microscopy equipments with their most important accessories listed below:

Scanning electron microscopy:

• FEG FEI NanoSEM 230 (equipped with EDS and EBSD spectrometer)
• SEM ThermoFisher Prisma E (equipped with WetSTEM, Heating Stage 1000ºC, Peltier)

 The unit has access to the sample preparation laboratory, equipped with all the necessary equipment for the preparation of samples that are required for routine work. The main equipment is:

• Leica ion mil RES102 ion beam milling equipment
• Leica TXP target preparation device
• Leica Sputter EM ACE200 Low Vacuum Coater
• Leica EM CPD300 critical point drying machine
• Leica Ultramicrotome UC6 fine-cut ultramicrotome

The Microscopy Unit has a quality management system in accordance with the UNE-EN-ISO 9001:2015 standard, audited annually by an external company, Bureau Veritas Certification, who assesses its suitability and compliance.
This Certification confirms the Unit's best practices and recognizes the maturity and effectiveness of its Management System, while also reaffirming its commitment to continuous improvement. It represents external recognition of the work and effort of the staff involved in providing our clients with the best service available.
