The Animal Assisted Intervention Office is part of the Planning and Strategy Vice-rectorate of the Rey Juan Carlos University, within the Agenda 2030 Strategic Plan.

It is an innovative office at regional and national level, which works both internally, informing and training URJC students, and externally. It covers both the professional sector and the individual who wishes to receive training or advice on the IAA. This is achieved thanks to a multidisciplinary team with professionals from the education, health and social branches, thus reaching a wide range of action.

Services

  • Planning and creation of Animal Assisted Intervention programs and support of other existing ones. Mainly, we work with the therapy dog ​​as an essential part of these interventions, aimed at groups that can benefit from them.
  • Supervision and follow-up of the programs launched, in order to guarantee their optimal functioning.
  • Undertaking and promotion of research activities with the purpose of obtaining a scientific basis that allows endorsing Animal Assisted Interventions.
  • Development of training activities aimed both at professionals in the Animal Assisted Interventions sector, as well as at all those who wish to start training on them, with the creation of a Own Title both as an expert and as a technician and online training.

Objectives

When we talk about objectives, we highlight:

  • Regulation of Animal Assisted Interventions (IAA)
  • Analyze the importance that animals have for humans today.​
  • Spread the benefits of the man-animal bond.​
  • Training for health promotion using animals as mediators in the process.​
  • Develop promotion, training and dissemination activities on the effects on human health of the various interventions with animals.​
  • Establish cooperation ties between Associations involved and the University.
  • Promote ethical aspects and responsible ownership for animal welfare.​

About Us

Currently, the operation of the OIAA is based on a first approximation between the entities that are interested in carrying out IAA at their facilities. Once the needs to be covered are known, the person in charge of the OIAA, Israel González, determines the professional profile that can fit those needs and proceeds to request a program for presentation to the interested entity.

At the same time, possible internal files for future payments are processed from the office, as well as the verification of the necessary and mandatory documentation to be able to start the programs. The financing of the programs is not only carried out from the OIAA budget, but sometimes external financing is sought in the form of sponsorship.

Once the program has been launched, the office is responsible for monitoring and if there is any anomaly, the interaction by the person in charge of the office is immediate.

Based on the fact that our programs, and in all of those in which we participate in one way or another, are carried out with groups that are mostly in need of specialized care due to their characteristics as individuals, we can say that our service to the community has a place in SDG 3 "Ensure a healthy life and promote well-being at all ages."

What are IAAs?

Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI)

Those interventions in the areas of health, education and social, designed, carried out and evaluated by professionals trained in the field, which include the participation of specially selected animals and whose purpose is to contribute to the therapeutic, social and educational improvement of the people.

Within the multiple areas in which animals can be valuable (emotional support in legal situations, diagnostic assessment or family support, etc.), we currently highlight the following modalities:

  • Animal Assisted Therapy.
  • ​Animal Assisted Education.​
  • ​Animal Assisted Activities.​
  • IAA Expert.
  • IAA socio-health/educational professional.
  • Technician at IAA.

Assistance dogs for people with disabilities

They are specifically selected dogs, educated and trained to live with and help people with disabilities.​

Dogs accredited as assistance dogs have the right of access to public establishments while they are working, since their work goes beyond the assistance they provide at home.​
