International Mention
La international mention is one of the mentions that the student can include in his title. According to the Regulations Governing Doctoral Studies, the student who does his doctorate at the Rey Juan Carlos University can include in his doctoral degree and under certain conditions, the following mentions:
1. International Doctorate
2. Industrial Doctorate (link)
3. Cum laude: The thesis evaluation committee may grant the mention of cum laude if the overall grade is outstanding and the positive secret vote is unanimously issued in this regard.
Rrespect to the International Mention in the doctoral degree:
The title of doctor may include the mention "International Doctorate" on its front, provided that the following circumstances concur:
a) That, during the training period necessary to obtain the doctoral degree, the doctoral student has completed a minimum stay of three months outside Spain in a prestigious higher education institution or research center.
b) That said stay and the activities to be carried out during it have been endorsed by the director and authorized by the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Program. This information will be incorporated into the doctoral student's activities document (form). Once the stay has been completed and validated by the host entity, the information related to the stay must be incorporated (Royal Decree 99/2011, Royal Decree 576/2023) to the activities document (RAPI). As supporting documentation in RAPI, the authorization of the Academic Committee and the certification/proof of stay at the receiving center will be provided (free format, see next item: point c).
c) That the person responsible for the stay at the destination center certifies the completion of the stay, indicating specific dates. In this sense, it is possible to carry out split stays as long as the Academic Committee authorizes them. In the case of split stays, all stays must be carried out in the same destination center and under the same person in charge.
The Steering Committee of the Doctoral School, at its meeting on June 27, 2023, agreed on the possibility of dividing the international stay into a maximum of 4 time periods, as long as the minimum time of each period is at least , 14 days. Hybrid stays are not allowed and must be entirely in-person. In accordance with Royal Decree 576/2023, at least one of the stays must have a minimum duration of one month.
d) That part of the doctoral thesis, at least the summary and conclusions, has been drafted and defended in one of the usual languages for scientific communication in its field of study, different from any of the official languages in Spain. This rule will not apply when the stays, reports and experts come from a Spanish-speaking country.
e) That at least two doctoral experts belonging to a non-Spanish higher education institution or research institute issue a favorable report on the doctoral thesis (form).
f) That at least one expert from a non-Spanish higher education institution or research center participate in the thesis evaluation panel, with the title of Doctor.
The EID Steering Committee will be the one who will authorize the reading of the thesis with International Mention, given the favorable report of the Academic Commission based on the documentation provided by the doctoral student to said commission.
joint guardianship
Doctoral thesis co-supervision consists of co-supervision of a doctoral thesis by researchers from the URJC and from another foreign university, so that it leads to obtaining a doctoral degree from both universities. This modality of doctoral thesis under a co-supervision regime represents a further step in achieving the internationalization of doctoral training and of the research carried out during the thesis.
To apply for a doctoral thesis under co-supervision, you must have:
1 – The commitment of two thesis directors, one linked to the doctoral program corresponding to the URJC and the other to a foreign university.
2 – The signing of a co-supervision agreement between both universities (the agreement model is available at the EID upon request).
3 – The completion of a stay of at least six months at the collaborating university. The details of carrying out a thesis under a joint supervision regime are in the regulations of the doctoral studies of the EID. In summary, and in addition to the conditions indicated above, the following must be met:
- Each institution will recognize the validity of the doctoral thesis based on a single defense and each institution will issue the doctoral degree.
- The doctoral student must meet the prerequisites of both countries and will enroll in each of the two institutions.
- The stay at the collaborating university may be carried out all at once or in several periods.
- The court before which the thesis must be defended will be designated by mutual agreement between the two institutions and its composition and operation will be in accordance with the legislation in force in each of the countries.
