The architect for the URJC, Carlos Conejo, in the exclusive scholarship 'Vulcanus in Japan'

The student, a graduate of the URJC Enabling Master's Degree in Architecture and the Degree in Fundamentals of Architecture, is part of the group of 30 science and technology students from all over Europe who will enjoy a one-year stay in Japan thanks to the scholarships ' Vulcanus'.

Carlos Conejo has arrived in Japan a few months ago and is now immersed in the first phase of the program: a 4-month Japanese course. For this young man, the experience is quite a challenge, since it means: “getting out of my comfort zone, facing new challenges, being independent in a country on the other side of the world”.

As Carlos says, "the possibility of participating in the Vulcanus program is an opportunity to be part of a group of 30 people from all over Europe, from different disciplines in the field of engineering, science and technology who are going to join Japanese companies and they will be able to develop professionally and personally for a year”.

After the course, Carlos will work in a Japanese company for 8 months (from January to August). He will have to combine this professional experience with carrying out a research project that "brings us closer to the Japanese and European reality and to the possibilities of cooperation and development between the two countries", he explains.

In short, for Carlos, “being able to live in Japan is a great personal and professional enrichment and a challenge. It is a unique opportunity to be part of a fascinating culture and to be able to learn from it, also having the opportunity to contribute the vision from my culture and way of understanding life”.

The program 'Vulcanus in Japan' It has been operating since 1997, and is organized by the EU-Japan Center for Industrial Cooperation and consists of carrying out industrial internships in that Asian country. The objective of this initiative is to introduce future executives of the European industry and administration to the Japanese business world. Through this plan, it is intended to create privileged relationships, to favor the realization of industrial cooperation projects between the European Union and Japan.

“My time at the URJC has given me the opportunity to generate critical thinking”

Carlos Conejo, who has spent 6 years at the Rey Juan Carlos University between his bachelor's and master's degrees, has highlighted "the opportunity to generate critical thinking" that the university has given him.

In addition, and more specifically in his field, he points out that the URJC has provided him with “the necessary tools to understand and analyze both the environment and the people, identify their needs, sensitivities and the social challenges we face. For this, Carlos adds, "to be able to contribute a grain of sand in terms of improving people's lives and offering approaches that can respond to these challenges, which is, ultimately, the objective of architecture and urbanism" .

Before traveling to Japan, Carlos had already achieved some successes in his still short career: together with other students, he was responsible for the Design and management of the Exhibition 'Arquitangents-Peripheral visions of the architect's profession', held at the Madrid City Council. In addition, he also, together with a group of colleagues, won the first prize in the 'Contest for the Rehabilitation of the Facade of the Hotel Confortel Suites Madrid'.
