Presentation

This Specialist Course in Chemical Substances is organized by the RiSAMA research group, belonging to the Department of Medical Specialties and Public Health, in collaboration with professors from the areas of Toxicology and Biomedicine from Universities such as Alcalá de Henares, Extremadura, Valencia, Seville and the Basque Country.

It also has the collaboration of professors from Research Centers such as IMDEA, the Talavera Public Health Institute, INIA and the National Center for Environmental Health-Area of ​​Environmental Toxicology.

We also have professors from the business world, such as the Business Federation of the Chemical Industry (FEIQUE), KERONA and AZIERTA, to which others will be added during the launch of the course.  

The Rey Juan Carlos University is affiliated with the One Health Platform, and the course co-director, Yolanda Valcárcel, is the University's delegate.

Objectives

The Chemical Substances Specialist course aims to train experts in knowing which chemical substances are in the spotlight of administrations, the scientific community and society, either due to their toxicity or impact on ecosystems, or because they are a problem for animal and human health.

The main training aspects of this expert are those related to the toxicology of these substances, prediction of their behavior, types of contaminants and effects at the cellular and molecular level, environmental and health. Knowing the methodologies and main studies on environmental and health risk assessment, reaching its legislation.

Finally, as a training complement, a module on environmental health will be given, where the main problems of chemical, physical and biological contaminants on animal and human health will be addressed, in a context of Global Health: health for all, including our planet.

The course will prepare students to work in different companies in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors, among others. It will aim to provide basic knowledge so that those students interested in a PhD or Master's degree can achieve it based on this prior knowledge.

There is an urgent need in the labour market to train professionals who are experts in the regulation of these substances, labelling and safety data sheets, as well as those who manage or at least know predictive toxicology tools.

Objectives: 

Know the types, functioning and health effects of the main groups of chemical substances.

  • Know the European Regulations on the handling of these substances.
  • Know the chemical, physical and biological contaminants in a Global Health context.
  • Environmental Epidemiology: main results of ongoing studies.

Subject 1. Toxicology, Environmental Toxicology, Ecotoxicology. Concepts. 

Subject 2. Environmental pollutants and effects on health, environment and at the molecular level. 

Subject 3. Alternatives to animal experimentation. 

Subject 4: Risk assessment

Subject 6. Regulatory toxicology.

This training will enable students to access positions related to the registration, classification, and legislative regulations of chemical substances. Therefore, companies in this sector (chemical: bicycles, pesticides, industries in general) will be their main contractors, as well as the pharmaceutical industry.          

This course, at MECES level 3, is aimed at students who have a previous university degree. Students enrolled in a Bachelor's or Double Degree who have yet to complete a maximum of 30 ECTS and/or TFG credits from an official university degree in Spain whose profile matches the legally established functions in the corresponding field may be admitted on a conditional basis. In this case, no type of certification will be obtained until it is proven that they are in possession of the official university degree required for access to postgraduate courses.

Exceptionally, they will also be able to access these professional studies without a previous official university degree that certifies work experience in this field. In this case, they will only be eligible for a diploma or a university extension certificate with the same name and number of credits as this Title, in accordance with the equivalence table included in Annex I of the Own Teaching Regulations of the Rey Juan University. Carlos.

In the event that the number of applications exceeds the number of places offered, a selection will be made based on the following objectively weighted criteria as stated:

  • Knowledge of English at B2 level accredited (15%)
  • Other different degrees (10%)
  • Demonstrable work experience in the chemical or related sector. (70%)

Contact hours: There will be remote sessions with tutors to reinforce each subject, and they will be agreed upon between the student teachers (afternoon schedule), they will be 3-4 synchronous hours.

* A university degree (bachelor's or bachelor's degree) is required to access both Master's and Expert and Specialist courses. However, on some occasions the possibility is considered for people without a previous university degree but who can demonstrate professional experience related to the subject of the course to access it.

This possibility must be included in the corresponding academic report and will be subject in all cases to the decision of the Course Director. People who access through this route will only receive a Diploma or a Certificate of University Extension depending on the case.
