External internships are training activities carried out by undergraduate and master's students of the Rey Juan Carlos University in public or private companies, institutions or organisations.
The management of external internships for Bachelor's and Official Master's degrees is the responsibility of the External Internship Unit, and is governed by the Regulation of External Internships.

EXCEPTIONS: In the case of the practices of Degrees in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education students should check their practice manual specific. Likewise, the Regulation of External Internships is not applicable to clinical internships included in the study plans of the degrees of Degree in Psychology, Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Dentistry and Occupational Therapy.
Students can carry out two types of external internships, curricular and extracurricular. Curricular external internships are those that can be evaluated, and are included as mandatory in the study plan of the degree that the student is pursuing. The first practices carried out will be considered curricular. Therefore, extracurricular external internships are those that, subsequently, students may carry out on a voluntary basis until the end of their degree.
Students can propose internships that they have found through means other than URJC. The interested entity must manage the internship through the University platform. More information in this link.
The University makes available to its students a platform of offers through which they can participate in numerous selection processes by the collaborating entities of the External Internship program.
Requirements to carry out external internships
To carry out external internships, students enrolled in a Bachelor's or Double Degree at the Rey Juan Carlos University must have passed at least 45% of the credits necessary to obtain the degree they are pursuing. Undergraduate students, as well as Master's students, must also have valid enrollment during the academic year in which the internship is carried out.
The first practices carried out by the student will always have a curricular nature. For this reason, the management and offer of curricular internships will have priority over those of an extracurricular nature.
The student, in general, cannot maintain a contractual or employment relationship with the entity in which they are going to carry out internships.
Students enrolled at the Rey Juan Carlos University, under 28 years of age, who carry out external internships in an entity in national territory through the corresponding educational cooperation agreement, will be covered by the University's school insurance. Students over 28 years of age are obliged to subscribe on their own to private insurance for personal risks and/or work accidents, without which the University will not be able to authorize or process their internships. In the case of international internships, all students must take out insurance of this type that covers their stay abroad.
IN CASE OF PRACTICES THAT INVOLVE CONTACT WITH UNDERAGE PERSONS
In compliance with Article 13.5 of Organic Law 1/1996, of January 15, on the Legal Protection of Minors, amending the Civil Code and the Law of Civil Procedure, and its wording in Article 1.8 of Law 26/ 2015, of July 28, modifying the protection system for children and adolescents, for carrying out internships in which contact with minors is maintained, it will be an essential requirement that the student present to the University, at the time of processing their internships, a negative certificate of crimes against freedom and sexual indemnity. Formalization of external internships
In order for a student to carry out internships in an entity, it is essential that the entity maintain or agree to sign a Collaboration agreement with the URJC.
In addition, the start of an internship must always be communicated in advance to the External Internship Unit. For each internship period that a student is going to carry out, the External Internship Unit will issue a Annex to the Agreement which will be sent to the corresponding entity, and which must be returned duly signed by both parties (entity and student).
The Internship Annex is a document with legal value and therefore the conditions reflected in it will be binding, so any modification to them must be previously authorized by the University. It is also the document that grants legal coverage and academic validity to the student's internship.
The minimum time necessary for the correct formalization and the effective incorporation of the student to the entity will be three business days for national internships, and ten business days for international internships, counted from the moment in which the entity expresses its agreement to accept to the student and this is accepted in the corresponding offer.
In no case will the hours carried out in the entity be counted without the prior authorization of the University, so that in the event that the completion of the internship is communicated on a date after the start date, the Internship Unit will compute them to from the date on which the agreement between the student and the company is recorded, without retroactive character.
Development and duration of internships
The internship periods will be included in the academic year in which the student is enrolled. In other words, an internship period will be limited to a single academic year (September 1-August 31). If an internship is planned to be carried out in a period that partially covers two academic years, only the part corresponding to the second of them will be authorized when the student has formalized their university enrollment in said course.
Curricular external internships must have the minimum duration established by the corresponding study plan *.

* INFORMATIVE NOTE ON THE DURATION OF THE CURRICULAR INTERNSHIPS
In accordance with ANECA recommendations, the duration of curricular internships must be reviewed in accordance with the provisions that regulate the European Higher Education Area, according to which one ECTS credit is equivalent to 25 hours of activity.
These recommendations imply that, as of the 2022-2023 academic year, all students of the degrees in Audiovisual Communication, Journalism, Tourism, Business Administration and Management in the Digital Field, as well as those of the Double Degrees whose subjects of External Practices are linked to these areas, must carry out 600 hours of curricular practices.
In order to ensure the correct development of the student's academic activities, the duration of the internship may not exceed, in addition, 50% of the duration of the academic year, so that the students may carry out a total (including curricular internships and extracurricular internships), a maximum of 900 hours of internships per academic year. This number of hours is also the maximum allowed to be carried out in the same entity.
The timetables for carrying out the internships will be established according to their characteristics and the availability of the student and the collaborating entity. They must be compatible with the student's academic activity at the University. In order to favor time compatibility with class attendance, a maximum of five hours of internships per day is recommended during teaching periods, and up to seven hours in non-teaching periods (maximum of 35 hours per week). Specific provisions may apply. in this sense, by the regulatory bodies of certain professional sectors.
In no case will academic exemption be granted to students for the purpose of carrying out an internship.
A student may not carry out more than one internship period simultaneously, and must effectively conclude each period in order to be authorized to join a new entity.
During each internship period, the student will be assigned an academic tutor (by the University) and a professional tutor (by the collaborating entity), whose identity will be included in the Internship Annex. The Regulation of External Internships collects the functions of both figures.
Given the academic and formative nature of the internships, their completion will not imply, in any case, an employment or contractual relationship with the entity in which they are carried out.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, and if so desired, the external entity may compensate the student as a study aid for the expenses that may be generated by reason of travel, maintenance or any other concept. If this economic consideration occurs, the entity must register the student with Social Security, in accordance with current provisions.
Abandonment of internships
The practices must be carried out in an uninterrupted manner. The student may only request their interruption or abandonment, presenting to the External Internship Unit a reasoned report of the reasons that he alleges for said early termination of the internship, and may only carry it out if the External Internship Unit expressly authorizes it. .
The unjustified abandonment of an internship by the student, even with the consent of the affected entity, may entail a penalty, for which the student is not allowed to join other internships for a period of time to be determined (never less than the period of internships that would have been processed in the entity in which he has left).
If it is about the student's curricular internships, an unfavorable report of their internships may also be issued and their External Internships subject may be graded as failing.
An entity, for its part, may terminate a student's internship in advance if it finds justified reasons. Similarly, the student's professional tutor must submit a reasoned report to the External Internship Unit with the reasons that justify said decision.
Evaluation of the external internship subject
The practices curricular They will be evaluated with a grade that will be included in the student's academic record with the other subjects that make up their study plan. The evaluation process will be enabled when the student has reached the 90% of compulsory curricular hours in your degree, and the qualification will become effective once you are enrolled in the subject External Practices.
The evaluation of the External Practices subject is carried out through the application of External Internships.
After half of the internship curricular period, the student must complete a Interim Report of practices. You will be able to do it electronically in the file of your internships, within the application of External Internships. The form will be enabled, which will remain active for a limited time, after which, you will no longer be able to make this report. In any of the cases, the academic tutor of the internship will be notified to carry out the appropriate follow-up.
The generic documentation that must be delivered at the end of the curricular practices is the following:
1.- A copy of the Annex to the Agreement. It is the document issued by the External Internship Unit to certify the student's incorporation into the entity, and which must be signed by the company and the student.
- If the annex is marked as signed in the External Internship Platform, the student will not have to send it again.
- If the annex is found “pending signing” the student will be able to upload, in PDF format, the practices annex signed by the three parties.
2.- Proof of the Satisfaction survey. The student will have to complete the External Internship Satisfaction Survey and upload the supporting document obtained at the end of the application. You will have the link to the survey on your practice sheet, once the evaluation process is open.

3. - The final memory of external internships that the student must complete. You will be able to do it electronically in the file of your internships, within the application of External Internships. The form will be enabled once the mandatory curricular hours are reached.
4.- El evaluation report of the professional tutor that the student has been assigned in the entity. The tutor may complete the report electronically, through the application of External Practices. At the end of the internship curricular period, the tutor will receive an email with the link to the evaluation report.

In the first instance, the External Internship Unit will formally review the documentation. If it is correct, it will be sent to the academic tutor assigned to the student, for evaluation.
The academic tutors will carry out the evaluation according to the criteria established in the Teaching guide of the subject (Consult teaching guides) and may require specific additional documentation from students.
Except in exceptional circumstances, the subject of External Practices will be graded within a maximum period of one month from the delivery of the documentation, and the grade can be consulted in the Service Portal.
If the student completes their curricular internships after the closing of the annual minutes of the subject (July), they must renew your registration in External Internships for the following course (for free, as it is an indefinite duration enrollment) and deliver their documentation when they finish the curricular internships, without prejudice to the grade. In cases in which the curricular hours are completed after the start of the following academic year, the evaluation will be carried out in the minutes of the new course, therefore (for the purposes of requirements for the maintenance of scholarships) must take into account that the subject will compute as credits not passed in the previous course.
Passing and validation of the external internship subject
Recognition of the internship subject for professional experience
To pass the External Internship subject, the activities carried out by students in companies or entities will be admitted as work or professional experience, when they have maintained an employment relationship with said institutions, and provided that the activities and skills are adjusted, in time and content, to the external internship program of the corresponding degree.
Recognition requests: until the closing of the annual minutes of the subject. To request recognition of the External Practices subject due to work experience, the student must be in their last academic year and enrolled in the External Practices subject. The work experience accredited by the student may be recognized in substitution of the external internship period that includes the training itinerary of their degree. This recognition will not imply a numerical grade, so it will not affect the average grade of the student's academic record. Recognition will not involve a refund of academic prices.

The request for recognition will be sent to the Faculty or School of the URJC on which the applicant's External Practices subject depends (if they are a Bachelor's student), or to the Coordination of their Master's Degree (if they are a Master's student); and it will be studied and assessed academically as passed or rejected, by an academic expert in their degree.
In any case, the Unit of External Practices does not have competitions on the recognition of the subject External Practices.

Validation requests: information and deadlines. In the case of the validation of the subject, it will not be necessary for the student to be enrolled in it during the academic year in which the application is submitted. The validation will only entail the payment of 25% of the registration fee for the subject, so that, if the student has already formalized their registration, they can request a refund of academic prices. The validation will be made with a grade of 5.
