Basic Information

Presentation

Rey Juan Carlos University presents this course for the training of professionals in the water, hygiene, and sanitation (WASH) sectors in humanitarian aid and development cooperation.

In a context where lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation remains the leading cause of death globally, and where water and sanitation infrastructure is essential for ensuring public health, this training plays a critical role for society, for achieving a fundamental human right, and for achieving the development goals of the 2030 Agenda.

The degree aims to equip students with an understanding of the complexities and challenges of water and sanitation management and to acquire the technical knowledge necessary to design, implement, and supervise projects in this sector. Students will also be provided with the necessary tools to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations and in vulnerable communities.

The course is delivered online, combining sessions focused on developing technical content with real-life case studies led by humanitarian experts from NGOs such as Action Against Hunger, the Red Cross, and ONGAWA, who have decades of experience in more than 50 countries. This provides a practical context for the application of the training content.

Objectives

  • Understand the specific challenges and needs related to water, sanitation, and hygiene in vulnerable settings and emergency situations, and their relationship with other sectors such as public health, livelihoods, and protection.
  • Acquire solid technical knowledge of the principles and practices of water exploration, collection, purification, and treatment in international cooperation and humanitarian aid.
  • Acquire solid technical knowledge of the principles and practices of monitoring the microbiological and physicochemical quality of water using laboratory and field methods.
