Internet of things and energy efficiency

This has been the main theme of the II Seminar on 'Smart Cities', organized by the URJC Telecommunications Engineering ETS with the sponsorship of the multinational IBM.

For two days, the Superior Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering of the Rey Juan Carlos University has held a seminar dedicated to intelligent cities or 'smart cities', and to the actions that can be carried out to manage energy resources and improve their efficiency.

The concept of 'smart city' is gaining strength as an alternative for the future of urban centers. Thanks to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), after decades of purely theoretical discussions, smart cities make a reality of concepts such as energy efficiency in transport and construction or direct participation in municipal policies by citizens. citizens.

The URJC is working on projects to implement technological aspects that will make the cities of the future more sustainable, such as the development of wireless sensor networks to achieve energy efficiency in buildings, and also created the Energy Efficiency Unit (UNEFE), "a transversal unit with the aim of reducing the environmental footprint and training the university community in energy efficiency and smart cities", said Juan Antonio Melero, vice-rector for Innovation, Scientific Quality and Research Infrastructures of the URJC, during the opening of the seminar.

Among the initiatives that are being carried out to define 'smart cities', the concept of 'Internet of things' (in English Internet of things, abbreviated IoT) also plays an important role at the service of the citizen. The IoT allows the digital interconnection of everyday objects with the Internet, "it is a disruptive change in communications", according to Elisa Martín Garijo, Director of Technology and Innovation at IBM Spain, who added that "the big problem is knowing what we do with the technology, how am I going to process and manage the data and how do we solve storage and security issues.”
