General requirements for access and admission to the Doctorate

The requirements for access to the doctorate, as determined in article 6, of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, modified by Royal Decree 43/2015, of February 2, are the following:

1. In general, to access an official doctoral program it will be necessary to be in possession of the official Spanish degrees of Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent, and Master's Degree, or equivalent, provided that at least 300 credits have been passed. ECTS in the set of these two teachings.

2. Likewise, those who are in any of the following cases may access:

1. Be in possession of official Spanish university degrees or equivalent Spanish degrees as long as at least 300 ECTS credits have been obtained in all of these courses and accredit level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
2. Be in possession of a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems belonging to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for homologation, that accredits a level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework, provided that said degree entitles access to higher education studies. doctorate in the country of issue. This admission will not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested party or its recognition for purposes other than access to doctoral education.

3. Be in possession of a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems outside the EHEA, without the need for its approval, after verification by the university that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish university Master's degree and that it authorizes the country of issue of the degree for access to doctoral studies. This admission will not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested party or its recognition for purposes other than access to doctoral education.

4. Be in possession of another Doctorate degree.

5. Likewise, university graduates who, after obtaining a place in training in the corresponding test for access to specialized health training places, have passed with a positive evaluation at least two years of training in a program to obtain an official title in one of the specialties in Health Sciences.

The second additional provision, section 2, of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, also establishes that graduates, architects or engineers who are in possession of the Diploma of Advanced Studies obtained in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 778/1998, of April 30, or have reached research proficiency regulated in Royal Decree 185/1985, of January 23.

Likewise, article 7 of the regulations governing doctoral studies, approved by the Governing Council of the Rey Juan Carlos University, specifies the access requirements for the following cases:

Access with foreign university degrees without homologation.

Students who, being in possession of non-validated qualifications obtained at a foreign university or higher education centre, wish to pursue doctoral studies at the Rey Juan Carlos University, may access them without the need for their qualifications to be previously recognised. To do so, they must submit the following documentation:

1. Non-recognized university degrees, or proof of application for them, duly legalized.
2. Official academic certification of all university studies completed, stating the subjects taken with the grades obtained, as well as the years and subjects that make up said degree, duly legalized.
3. If you have completed your studies in the EHEA, the European Diploma Supplement.
4. If the studies have been completed outside the EHEA, an official certificate issued by the university that awarded the degree. The official certificate must prove that the degree qualifies for access to doctoral studies in the country in which it was issued.

Any degree or certificate must be submitted in Spanish or English. If deemed necessary, the EID may require a translation by an official translator.

In no case will this access to doctoral studies imply the homologation of the foreign degree held by the interested party, nor the recognition of the same for any purpose other than pursuing doctoral studies.

In addition to the access requirements set out above, the academic committee of each Doctoral Programme may establish additional requirements and criteria to those indicated above. In particular, in accordance with Royal Decree 576/2023, it may be established as a mandatory requirement to have the endorsement of a researcher as a possible director of the doctoral thesis. Each Doctoral Programme may also include the requirement for specific training supplements, which will be determined based on the student's access profile. These specific training supplements must be passed in the initial period of development of the thesis, in a maximum period of one academic year.

In the case of applicants for doctoral programmes not directly related to their curriculum, the academic committee will determine whether or not they are admitted. Applicants for access to a doctoral programme at the URJC EID who hold a doctorate degree must indicate this circumstance during the admission period.

At least 5% of the places offered will be reserved for students who have been recognized as having a disability of 100% or more, as well as for students with permanent special educational needs associated with personal circumstances of disability, who in their previous studies have required resources and support for their full educational normalization.

Documentation to present and forms of delivery

In the pre-registration request made via the Internet, the following documentation must be attached in an attached file.

• Official Academic Certificate issued by the official center of origin in which the qualifications of the studies carried out by the applicant are recorded, accrediting compliance with the general requirements for access to doctoral studies, which are established in article 6 of RD 99/ 2011, of January 28: Academic Certification of the University Master's Degree completed, as well as the rest of previous studies for access to said Master's Degree (graduate, diploma, graduate or equivalent) issued by the official center of origin in which the total credits are recorded made. These certifications will not be necessary if the studies have been carried out at the Rey Juan Carlos University.
• University degrees or receipts of having requested them.
• National Identity Document or equivalent.
• Curriculum vitae
• Any other document specifically required by the Coordinator of the doctoral program for its acceptance.
• Presentation letter
• Responsible declaration of veracity

Students with a foreign degree:

• Photocopy of the Passport or Residence Card.
• Certified/Collated Photocopy of Foreign Higher Education Degrees (Bachelor's Degree, Architect, Engineer, Master's, Doctor...)
• Certified/collated photocopy of the study certificates.
• Accredit, by means of a certificate, that the studies carried out give access to official doctoral studies in their country of origin.

All documentation provided must be legalized in accordance with Spanish law and translated by an official translator.

The scanned presentation of the documentation mentioned in the previous sections and the specific documentation that may be required from each doctoral program within the pre-registration period is essential, since otherwise the applicants will not be able to be evaluated by the Academic Committees of the programs doctorate, which are the bodies responsible for the admission of doctoral students.

In the case of not submitting the aforementioned documentation, the applicant will not be able to self-register.

Number of new entry places offered

Reservation of places for students with disabilities

In accordance with article 51 of Royal Decree 1892/2008, of November 14, which regulates the conditions for access to official university education, 5% of the available places will be reserved in each of the programs of doctorate for students who have recognized a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33 per 100.

In the event that these places are not filled, they will be occupied by the rest of the students.

In the online pre-registration application, the request for a place for this quota must be stated and later, in the case of being admitted, among the documentation to be presented, the administrative resolution by which the condition of being admitted must be accredited. disabled.

In compliance with the provisions of the general regulations for the disabled, as well as Additional Provision 24.6 of the LOMLOU, students who have some type of disability will have the right to total exemption from public fees and prices in doctoral studies.
