A study will analyze the consumption of medicines by workers in the cleaning sector

The project entitled “Gender inequality in drug consumption patterns among cleaning sector workers. GEMETRAL Study” aims to identify, from a gender perspective, the factors associated with drug consumption patterns, both prescribed and self-medicated, among cleaning sector workers living in Spain. This research will be carried out over the next three years with the participation of leading researchers and experts in the field.

This study, led by Dr. Pilar Carrasco Garrido, will focus on investigating how social and gender inequalities in health influence drug consumption patterns, especially psychotropic drugs and painkillers. “This project is an opportunity to advance knowledge of the use and consumption of drugs and develop solutions that could change the way we understand and address drug consumption patterns in this group of workers,” said Dr. Carrasco during the presentation of the study, who also highlighted the importance of collaboration between different disciplines and the support of the two main trade union organizations in our country, Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO.) and Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT). “These social agents have expressed their interest and support for a project that will allow citizen participation in health, due to its ability to influence decisions regarding health by being linked to prevention and health promotion,” said Dr. Carrasco.

The presentation of the project was attended by professionals from different fields, who showed great interest in the project objectives and its possible long-term impact.

The project has recently been funded by the State Research Agency (AEI) in its Knowledge Generation Projects category, which will provide the necessary resources to carry out cutting-edge research and develop innovative contributions in this field that could open up new opportunities in the future.
