The URJC continues to take firm steps in its commitment to sustainability and the energy transition by promoting renewable energy and improving energy efficiency on its campuses. Currently, the institution has over 700 kWp of photovoltaic capacity installed on the roofs of its buildings, a capacity that has multiplied in the last two years and has generated nearly 800.000 kWh in the last fiscal year, representing more than 6% of its electricity consumption and savings of over €160.000.
Along these lines, the university is implementing a new installation of over 500 kWp using photovoltaic canopies on the Fuenlabrada Campus. This project will cover approximately 20% of the campus's electricity demand and will also add value to the university environment by integrating sustainable solutions into parking areas, providing shade and optimizing space use.
The URJC also has plans for two new photovoltaic installations of approximately 700 kWp each on its Móstoles and Alcorcón campuses. These projects, expected to be approved in the coming months, are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing the university's carbon footprint and optimizing energy consumption across its infrastructure. Once these projects are completed, the university could cover around 25% of its electricity consumption through self-consumption, with estimated savings exceeding €650.000 annually, a figure subject to energy price fluctuations.
With this set of initiatives, URJC reinforces its position as a leader in sustainability within the Spanish university system, moving towards a cleaner, more efficient energy model aligned with decarbonization goals. These investments not only contribute to reducing emissions but also promote environmental awareness within the university community, integrating sustainability as a cross-cutting theme in academic and institutional activities, while also allowing for cost containment in a context of high volatility in energy markets.
