As part of its biennial awards ceremony, the Professional Association of Physiotherapists of Madrid has honored Roberto Cano de la Cuerda, professor of the Faculty of Health Sciences, with the recognition of 'Best representative of physiotherapy in Madrid 2026', thanks, as the organization has pointed out, to "a career as prolific as it is rigorous in the areas of care, teaching, research and management."
In the words of Cano de la Cuerda, “the most significant aspect of this award is that you cannot nominate yourself; you must be nominated by other registered physiotherapists.” In this regard, the award recipient emphasized that “it is a source of pride and an honor to receive this recognition from colleagues at other universities and healthcare institutions in Madrid.”
Presented by the dean of the College of Physiotherapists of Madrid, Aurora Araújo, and by the general director of 'Madrid Excellent', Elena Mantilla, the award not only recognizes Cano de la Cuerda's role as a professor at Rey Juan Carlos University, but also his ability to open a new thematic line in the field of neurorehabilitation research, as well as his decisive contribution to the use of technology as a complement to the physiotherapeutic approach.
A long teaching and research career at URJC
Roberto Cano de la Cuerda, affiliated with Rey Juan Carlos University since 2007, currently teaches various subjects in the Physiotherapy degree program and the Master's Degree in Motor Neurocontrol. Regarding the close relationship between this recognition and his teaching at URJC, the professor emphasized that "although physiotherapy is a very clinical profession, focused on the treatment table and treating patients, it is essential that it be informed by research, so as not to fall into the trap of simply repeating past practices based on mere empiricism."
Finally, Cano de la Cuerda wanted to acknowledge “all the people who have dedicated themselves to teaching and research in our field, as they are the ones who have made it possible for me to be here.” Along these lines, “it is important to highlight our teaching and research work in order to expand the profession through research,” he concluded.
