The QuirónSalud-URJC Chair of Robotic Surgery is born

Rey Juan Carlos University and a private hospital group have launched a research initiative designed to apply technology to various medical specialties. The chair will be endowed with €25.000 in funding.

Rector Abraham Duarte and Adolfo Fernández-Valmayor Ruíz, director of patient relations and digital hospital at QuirónSalud, signed the agreement last Friday establishing the QuirónSalud-URJC Chair of Robotic Surgery

The objective of this Chair is to launch research and teaching activities and projects associated with and framed within the field of robotic surgery applied to different surgical specialties (urology, general and digestive surgery, gynecology, thoracic surgery and otolaryngology), as well as in transversal areas of technological innovation, artificial intelligence applied to surgical practice, clinical results, health management and knowledge transfer.

Specifically, the Chair will promote activities in the following areas: in training, through robotic surgery simulation courses, workshops, seminars, and roundtables with national and international professionals; in research and development, through multicenter clinical projects, the creation of digital surgical support tools, the evaluation of new techniques, and the promotion of artificial intelligence applications; and in knowledge dissemination and transfer, by organizing conferences and symposia, publishing results, and disseminating information to healthcare professionals, patients, and industry.

The agreement signed on Friday, May 8, is valid for four years from the date of signing. The Chair may be extended by express agreement of the parties for a period of up to four additional years.

The Chair will be based at the Faculty of Health Sciences and its activities will be directed by the Chair's director or by whomever he delegates in each specific case, and other professors and researchers from the URJC, as well as staff from other Universities, research centers or private entities, may participate through different activities.

The Chair's director will be proposed by the Joint Monitoring Committee and appointed by the Rector of the URJC and will have the functions granted to him by the Regulations for the creation and operation of Research Chairs of the Rey Juan Carlos University.

25.000 euros of financing

QuirónSalud commits to financially supporting the Chair with annual contributions, for the duration of the Chair, amounting to €25.000.

For its part, the URJC agrees to provide the necessary facilities and infrastructure for the Chair's activities, as well as the logistical and IT resources required. Subject to availability, other URJC infrastructure may also be made available at no cost. The University will provide the necessary research staff and will disseminate the findings as agreed upon by both parties.
