El Master's Degree in Permanent Training in Television Journalism, promoted by the RTVE Institute and the Rey Juan Carlos University, aims to qualify its students in the use of the most advanced audiovisual tools, and in the writing and presentation of news in front of the camera, thus complementing the theoretical teachings of the degrees or bachelor's degrees in Information Sciences.

Practical teaching, specialization and comprehensive knowledge are necessary for the new journalist who works in a digital and multimedia environment, all under a process of convergence of television with other terminals. For this we have the most advanced technical means and the best professionals from TVE and the Rey Juan Carlos University.

Objectives

The Master's in Television Journalism's main purpose is to train future audiovisual journalists who will be integrated into the multimedia newsrooms of the main television networks in the Spanish and Ibero-American market.

Therefore, the objectives of the Master are the following: 

  • Train the student to integrate into the new multimedia newsrooms of television channels.
  • Teach the student to translate the concepts ideas, news, etc., into images.
  • Show the student the new structure of the audiovisual market in Spain and in the world, for a more effective integration in it.
  • Show the specific routines of the new journalistic profession in an open and changing environment.
  • Adapt the student to the new contractual modalities of the television market.
  • Understand the synergies between television, radio, the press and the Internet, and the resulting consequences for the journalistic profession.
  • Familiarize the student with the new techniques and technologies used in the production of news.
  • Understand the informative treatments of certain events through the personal experiences of television professionals.
  • Integrate the student in the professional circuit by providing him with an adequate curriculum for the exercise of the profession.
  • Create "networks of excellence" of television professionals that constitute the reference of the sector in Spain.
  • Meet the demands of the new media, providing them with multimedia professionals with an open conception of the information product.
  • Teach the student to value the news as an informative product in a competitive market.
  • And finally, guide the student on the new challenges of the journalistic profession such as specialization, copyright, the rise of local media, globalization. etc.

GENERAL COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to understand the main current debates and evaluate the media events derived from the current situation.
  • Ability to disseminate, according to communication strategies, complex current news messages in a coherent manner.
  • Ability to bring knowledge, ideas and debates of informative content to society through the different journalistic modalities.
  • Ability to identify and appropriately use the sources for the development of information.
  • Ability to function as a communication professional who respects the legal and ethical standards of the profession.

SPECIFIC COMPETENCES

  • Master the guidelines that govern audiovisual communication for the elaboration of the different audiovisual news genres.
  • The student must be able to translate the concepts ideas, news, etc., into images.

Program

News editing and writing 15 ECTS

Topics to be covered in the module

  • Style, language and writing
  • Editing and writing workshop I
  • Editing and writing workshop II

Objectives:

  • Knowledge and mastery of reading and writing techniques in front of the camera. Assume the differences and peculiarities of television with respect to other communication media in order to create and present the news. Mastery and use of the physical resources available for a more efficient transmission of the news. 
  • Knowledge in the search, selection and ordering of the news. Resource management, allocation of times to the different news items, rundown design and news style.

Informative genres 15 ECTS

Topics to be covered in the module

  • The news: analysis, information and evaluation
  • Coverage of the press conferences
  • The television report
  • Specialized information
  • Stories and creativity on television. news analysis
  • Creation of digital news content and management of social networks. 

Objectives:

  • Differentiation of the different news formats on television, characteristics, structure, peculiarities, concept of "news genre". Knowledge and understanding of the most suitable formats for each informative treatment.
  • Practical approach to coverage of press conferences, one of the most classic and common information formats in organizations, entities, groups, etc. Knowledge and differentiation of the resources and techniques used in press conferences, to condense the most suitable discursive elements for the production of news.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and technologies for the creation of digital news content and the management of news content on social networks.

Presentation and speech 11 ECTS

Topics to be covered in the module

  • Locution and voice techniques
  • Presentation and direct in informative programs
  • Styling and makeup

Objectives:

  • Control of all the skills that are essential for a correct and effective use of the voice.
  • Knowledge and use of personal resources in front of a camera in news programmes. Reading with AutoCue and presentation of the news with chroma-key.

Camera, edition and distribution 13 ECTS

Topics to be covered in the module

  • taking pictures, lighting
  • Editing and assembly of news
  • The direct and the realization

Objectives:

  • Understanding and knowledge of image-taking techniques and technologies for the generation of informative audiovisual material. Influence and use of basic lighting techniques as an expressive resource for taking images. Creation of an "informative" image format suitable for the creation of the informative product.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and digital technologies of montage in news programs: characteristics, differentiating elements, rhythm, conjunction and coordination of the video and audio band. General principles of image montage.
  • Practical knowledge of the techniques and technologies used in the production of news programmes: the role of the production team, the peculiarities of the news genre, the visual rhythm, live decision-making, the camera's point of view and its influence on the creation of the final product.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and technologies for the creation of digital news content and the management of news content on social networks.

Master's thesis 6 ECTS

The Final Degree Project will consist of the individual or exceptional group (maximum three people) elaboration of an audiovisual report. This will have to be accompanied by a report detailing the creation process. In this work the student will put into practice all the knowledge acquired in the different subjects that are addressed in the master's curriculum.

Internships in TVE 30 ECTS

Recipients

The master's degree is aimed at graduates and graduates from Spanish and foreign universities with degrees, preferably in Journalism and Audiovisual Communication. Likewise, those who are in their last year of studies and who have a maximum of 15 ECTS credits remaining to complete it may take it. If at the end of the master's degree the student has not passed those pending credits of the degree that gives him or her access to the master's degree, he or she will not be able to receive any degree or certificate.

Number of places offered: 18

To be admitted to the Master's Degree, it will be necessary to pass an Entrance Examination consisting of a current affairs test (with questions on politics, economics, international issues, culture and sports), the writing of a current news item and its presentation before the camera (where vocalization and locution will be valued).

Number of reserved places: 1. When the number of applications that meet the access requirements exceeds the number of places available, a place is reserved for vulnerable groups (disability, victims of terrorism and gender violence, article 50 of the regulation) with the same selection criteria. In the event that said quota is not covered, it will pass to the general quota.

The human team that makes up the Master's in Television Journalism is made up of a fair and relevant mix of professionals of wide and recognized prestige from RTVE and by professors from the University. 

The direction of the Master is made up of a director and an executive secretary who will coordinate the activities throughout the duration of the Master.

The students of the Master must go to the address of the Master to express their doubts or to notify any incident. The direction of the Master may delegate to another person the auxiliary function that it determines, in those cases that are necessary due to professional obligation. Likewise, the direction of the Master may determine, without prior notice, the changes and alterations in schedules, teachers and contents of the theoretical modules and the availability of practice teams that may occur throughout the Master.

Duration and development

The course will begin on October 15, 2024 and will end on September 30, 2025 with the internship module on TVE.

The admission exam will be held at the RTVE Institute (Carretera de la Dehesa de la Villa, s/n in Madrid) on July 8, 2024 at 15.30:XNUMX p.m.

The content of the Master's program has a teaching load of 90 credits ECTS and is divided into theoretical-practical and practical modules.

The theoretical-practical modules include face-to-face classes, conferences and monographs. 

The practical modules include professional technology workshops (TTP), ENG practices and work practices in TVE (Central Informative services).

Classes will take place mainly at the university headquarters located in Manuel Becerra and at the RTVE Institute headquarters from 16:00 p.m. to 21:00 p.m. As a rule, classes at the Manuel Becerra headquarters will take place from 16:00 p.m. to 20:00 p.m. and classes at the RTVE Institute from 16:00 p.m. to 21:00 p.m.

Pre-registration: €500. This amount is included in the total cost of the course and will be refunded if your academic application is not accepted. If, once the student's application is accepted, he/she does not formalize the registration, the amount deposited as pre-registration will not be returned.

Documentation to attach, forms and place of delivery

the applicants they will present all the scanned documentation, in the formats allowed through the telematic self-registration application at the time of applying for admission to own degrees. They must compulsorily attach to their request the declaration of the person responsible for the veracity of the data provided in digital format.

Students with a degree obtained from a Spanish university or a Higher Education Institution belonging to another Member State of the European Higher Education Area that authorizes access to own postgraduate degrees must present the following documentation:

  • Any other document that the Director of the Own Title specifically requires for its acceptance

Students with a foreign degree must present the following documentation:

  • Passport or Residence Card
  • Foreign Higher Education Degree (Graduate, Graduate, Architect, Engineer Doctor...) that give access to own postgraduate degree studies.
  • Certificate certifying that the studies carried out give access to an Official Postgraduate Degree in your country of origin, issued by the University of origin
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Declaration of the person responsible for the veracity of the data provided in digital format
  • Any other document that the Director of the Own Title specifically requires for its acceptance

Applicants with studies completed in foreign University Centers may be requested at any time a certificate of verification of these studies and centers, issued by an authorized Institution.

All documentation provided must be legalized in accordance with Spanish law and translated by an official translator.
