The URJC climbs positions in the Green Metric ranking that evaluates environmental sustainability measures in universities around the world

The Rey Juan Carlos University occupies the seventh position among Spanish universities according to the Green Metric ranking, which analyzes and evaluates the environmental sustainability policies of more than 400 universities around the world. In the national indicators, the URJC was ranked 13th in 2014, ninth in 2015 and seventh in 2016. At an international level it has gone from position 148 in 2015 to 78 in 2016. In 2014 it was ranked 212.

The Green Metric ranking is an initiative sponsored and promoted by Universitas Indonesia that was launched in 2010. A year earlier it had organized an international conference where renowned experts recommended introducing new indicators to classify universities according to their efficiency and their policies. to reduce their carbon footprint and thus help combat global climate change.

At that time, universities were identified that, both individually (Chicago, Harvard, Copenhagen and others) and through consortiums and institutional agreements, had launched specific projects and measures to support international efforts against the impact of global climate change. Universities constitute a unique platform to demonstrate the commitment of the scientific and educational community in the battle against climate change.

According to those responsible for the Green Metric project, "the objective of this ranking is to disseminate the results of the survey on the state and policies related to the concept of green campus and sustainability in universities around the world, in a way that increases the commitment and attention in the fight against global climate change, energy efficiency, water conservation, waste recycling and non-polluting transport”.

The Rey Juan Carlos University, both through the Campus of International Excellence (CEI) project, as well as through the Energy Efficiency Unit (UNEFE) and the Green Office, has been developing policies and applying very active measures to improve its indicators related to the best use of natural resources, energy consumption, waste recycling and other measures that contribute to reducing the impact on the environment and combating climate change.
