Rey Juan Carlos University buys energy from 100% renewable sources

The URJC becomes the second university outside of Catalonia to join the joint energy purchasing group of the Consorci de Serveis Universitaris de Catalunya (CSUC).

With its membership, the Rey Juan Carlos University has benefited from savings of 11,6% in electricity billing and 28,3% in the case of gas billing, which means approximately an overall reduction in the second semester of 2017 of €113.000.

The objective of the Energy Efficiency Unit (UNEFE) of the Rey Juan Carlos University is the continuous improvement of energy performance and cost reduction. To achieve this, UNEFE carried out a study of the different types of energy contracting, which culminated in July 2017 with the incorporation of the CSUC joint purchasing group. The URJC is the second university outside of Catalonia to join the group, after the Complutense University.

The last energy purchase made with the CSUC, for the years 2018 and 2019, has not only had an impact on obtaining a beneficial price for its members, but also on fulfilling our commitment to the environment by requiring the successful bidder to reserve energy from renewable sources for group supplies.

The result of this tender has been the obtaining of 100% renewable energy in both high and low voltage for the members of the consortium. The electricity, with a guarantee of origin, must come from renewable sources (wind, solar, aerothermal, geothermal, hydrothermal and oceanic, hydraulic, biomass, landfill gases, gases from purification plants and biogas).

Currently, the CSUC energy purchasing group is made up of a total of 34 institutions, including public and private universities, science and technology parks, research centers and other affiliated entities.
