The university, sensitized with its energy efficiency

During the month of June, the URJC has been part of different pilot projects, training courses and congresses related to energy efficiency.

The university, through UNEFE, has promoted activities related to energy efficiency, betting on the development of new innovative projects in the field of the Smart Campus, attending a training course on efficient lighting and giving a talk at the 'IENER 18' of Energy Engineering.

BIM pilot project

The Management building on the Móstoles campus has been chosen to implement the BIM work methodology (Building Information Modeling) which consists of the creation of digital models of buildings and facilities to centralize and index all the information about the property. It is the first step towards the Smart Campus and the digitization of assets.

Javier Orellana, Energy Manager of the UNEFE (Energy Efficiency Unit of the URJC), has pointed out that betting on this technology is not only mandatory due to European regulations, but also facilitates the process of accessing information. "It is useful because it centralizes all the information on air conditioning, fire, security, plumbing... in a 3D model so that any type of user can access the data", he explained.

This project is a first step towards a smart campus that uses virtual and augmented reality: "We are digitizing the buildings and services (which is already done with the mobile app), to make the entire campus smart," Orellana said.

La Energy Efficiency Unit (UNEFE) leads this project for its implementation in the university. This methodology will be mandatory in public bidding processes in Spain at the end of 2018. Different actors from UNEFE, maintenance personnel, professors who teach subjects related to graphic expression, and renowned companies such as Enerdex, Tecnalia, Aenor and Saint-Gobain.

As a pilot project, a workshop on point cloud laser scanning technology and subsequent BIM modeling was held on June 21. This workshop was organized by UNEFE and Enerdex and given by Tecnalia. It was attended by staff from UNEFE, maintenance and teaching and research staff from the university, as well as the company AENOR.

Congress 'IENER 18'

On June 27 and 28, the first 'Energy Engineering Congress (IENER 18)', which has cited the best professionals in the energy sector. Javier Orellana has participated giving a paper entitled 'Retrocommissioning: an essential measure for energy improvement'.

The presentation presented the energy optimization pilot project for the Library Building on the Móstoles Campus, which "detects the problems of the library in terms of energy and comfort, its causes of problems of high consumption and discomfort, and proposes a series of actions to It improves that other similar buildings at the university can be extended”, declared the UNEFE energy manager.

The aim is to carry out a pilot project with leading companies such as Siemens and AENOR, supported by URJC students, which focuses on analyzing and optimizing the energy and functional performance of a university building. All so that, in the future, "energy consumption can be reduced and the thermal sensation of the occupants improve while saving energy", he expressed.

Philips Training

In the last week of June, PHILIPS – SIGNIFY has organized a technical workshop with universities, including the Rey Juan Carlos University. The purpose of this conference was to learn about the latest in connected lighting such as PoE technology (Power over Ethernet, which allows global communication between systems), LiFi (Lightfidelity, which consists of a wireless communication technology transmitted by visible light) or Performance Control Systems in teaching (SchoolVision).

After the course, the attendees moved to the Móstoles campus to visit the Living Laboratory of Lighting and see the new outdoor lights installed. “One of the projects we have carried out has been in changing the exterior lighting for a more efficient LED one”, Orellana concluded.
