The Rey Juan Carlos University is one of the 100 most sustainable universities in the world, as confirmed by the recent publication of the '2021 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings'. In Spain, the URJC is ranked as the 5th most sustainable university in the country. As far as the Community of Madrid is concerned, the Rey Juan Carlos University is second, only behind the Complutense University.

As Diana Benito, deputy vice-rector for Strategy at the URJC, points out, “once again this year, the URJC has been recognized for the efforts made by its university community in environmental matters. Being among the 100 best universities in the world is at least exciting. It is stimulating to continue working. It is an important step in achieving our URJC2030 Project: https://www.urjc2030.es/, which is being promoted by the Vice President for Planning and Strategy. This is great news for the entire university community and I would not like to fail to value the work of the Green Office and the Energy Efficiency Unit”.

The 'UI GreenMetric World University Rankings' is a list that takes into account universities from around the world and assigns them a score based on the current condition and policies related to the fight against climate change, sustainability, energy, recycling and water conservation, among other indicators.

Leader in training, waste management and mobility

The Rey Juan Carlos University stands out in the categories of 'Training in Sustainability', 'Waste Management' and 'Sustainable Mobility'. “We are the 1st Spanish university in the “Training in Sustainability” block, 2nd in the “Waste Management” block and 3rd in the “Sustainable Mobility” block, and that not only indicates that we are on the right path, but that we are doing very well. The URJC is not a neophyte in the development of environmental policies, the good management that is being carried out is reflected every year in these relevant positions that we achieve in international rankings. In addition, it should be noted that we have improved the score compared to previous years in the "Infrastructure" and "Water" blocks. Explains Diana Benito.

The main objective of the "UI GreenMetric World University Ranking" is to encourage the use of environmentally friendly policies and activities, reducing environmental impact and promoting commitment in the university community. This year, the ranking has analyzed a total of 956 universities from all over the world.
