The work of this young URJC doctoral student has been selected among the four finalists of the XNUMXst Spain Research Prize, organized by the Cisneros Association, a cultural entity dedicated to promoting the culture and history of Spain.

For Víctor Fernández, who also graduated in Tourism from the Rey Juan Carlos University, “it is a recognition of the research work” and points out that all the authors of the finalist works agreed that “this type of contest should be held to the field of public administrations”.

The 25st Spain Prize is intended for young researchers under XNUMX years of age who were born or reside "in Spain as well as nationals of any of the countries that have formed part of Spanish territory, such as Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Italy (Europe), the former Spanish America (all the countries of the American continent except Brazil and Canada), the Philippines (Asia) or the Western Sahara (Africa)”, according to what can be read on the association's website.

Victor Fernández began working on his research three years ago, “when I was doing my internship, which I did at Paradores. One of the concierges told me about the history of the Monterreal Fortress (currently Parador de Baiona, Pontevedra) and from there I began to investigate”. The jury has highlighted the work of this URJC doctoral student for his study of documentary sources and his bibliography.

The work of this young researcher focuses on the legacy of the family of Ángel Bedriñana Meana "an Asturian who made his fortune in Cuba and on his return acquired the Fortress, carrying out a major reform, turning it into a tourist site and noted for his philanthropic work" explains Fernández, who adds that his research work has "rescued that philanthropic legacy of the family, forgotten by history."

At this time, Víctor Fernández is in his second year at the International Doctoral School where he is preparing a thesis in which he studies the history of tourism in Baiona. “I decided to do my doctorate to complete the research I carried out in my TFM (distinguished by REDINTUR as one of the best postgraduate tourism research projects in Spain), since I started and have been researching more, I like the idea of being able to dedicate myself to teaching because of what it means to transfer knowledge to students, as well as the beauty, albeit with its difficulties, of research work”.

In addition, this young man affirms that he wants to continue researching from his field of study, the history of tourism, to try to provide solutions to the current challenges of the sector, rescuing forgotten approaches and practices that can open new perspectives.
