A contest to illustrate URJC books

'Escrito con arte' is the name of the Rey Juan Carlos University Plastic Arts competition. Participants can compete by offering their designs for the covers of the works provided by members of the university community.

The Rey Juan Carlos University continues to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its foundation and the Culture area has prepared a series of cultural promotion activities and contests for the occasion, such as the URJC Plastic Arts contest, which this year is presented under the title 'Escrito con art'.

The competition will consist of illustrating the cover of a book. But what books are going to be illustrated? As it is a special edition for the 25th anniversary, from the Culture area they have thought that they are works by authors or co-authors of the Rey Juan Carlos University.

The idea is that the authors lend a copy that will serve as a support for the contestants to make their drawings. Once the covers have been evaluated by a jury, the authors will receive their copies back with a work of art inside.

The URJC has many authors who have published books, be it novels, essays, poetry, monographs, etc. “The response is being fantastic. They have understood that it is a beautiful initiative in which everyone wins”, says Elena Díaz, from the Culture area.

“The objective of the initiative is to make university life. Almost all the contestants who are going to present themselves are students and the teachers are mostly the ones who are lending the books”. According to Elena Díaz, up to 70 authors have already offered to lend their books as supports for the contest.

The illustrations that will go to the competition may be of free technique and the themes must be related to the university and university life. Authors of books who want to lend their copies can sign up for this form and in mid-March the call for the Plastic Arts contest will be opened to illustrate them.

From the Department of Culture, they assure that with cultural promotion contests such as the Plastic Arts contest, the aim is to promote artistic promotion within the university community, as well as to promote and encourage creative activities. That is why, for this year, the amount and number of prizes in the contests have been improved.
