La University Clinic of the Rey Juan Carlos University organizes in collaboration with the Spanish Association Against Cancer of Madrid (AECC) an oral cancer prevention campaign that will help to know the risk of suffering from this pathology to patients, students and residents of the area.

Oral cancer includes cancers of the mouth and the back of the throat. Oral cancers form on the tongue, in the tissue lining the mouth and gums, under the tongue, at the base of the tongue, and in the throat area at the back of the mouth.

In Spain, 85% of oral cancer cases are diagnosed late. Every year 7.000 cases are detected in our country. Of all of them, only 25-30% are diagnosed early.

This type of cancer occurs more often in people over 40 years of age and affects more than twice as many men as women. Most cases of oral cancers are related to tobacco use, alcohol use (or both), or infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV).

The role of the dentist in the prevention of oral cancer is of great importance. When the patient undergoes regular dental check-ups, it is possible to detect any potentially malignant lesion early and carry out the relevant tests for its diagnosis and the subsequent referral to the corresponding professional to treat it.
