On December 23, 2014, the City Council of the Real Sitio and Villa de Aranjuez signed an agreement with the Rey Juan Carlos University, in which it ceded the old San Carlos Hospital for the next 75 years in exchange for its complete rehabilitation. Today, May 31, 2022, after years of work and an investment of almost 9 million euros, marks the day of the reopening of this building.

The inauguration of the San Carlos Hospital took place this morning at 11 am. The newly opened assembly hall, which has a capacity to hold up to 350 people, has hosted this event. It was attended by Javier Ramos, the rector of the Rey Juan Carlos University, and the mayor of Aranjuez, María José Martínez de la Fuente, among others.

During his inauguration speech, Javier Ramos congratulated all the professionals involved in the reconstruction of the building, as well as highlighted the importance of this project for the university community. “We take another step so that Aranjuez becomes a center of knowledge and transmission of wisdom. This project makes it possible that, through the services provided by the Rey Juan Carlos University, people can have quality education and a promising future within their reach”, concludes the rector.

The San Carlos Hospital was originally built in the 1770s and officially declared an Asset of Patrimonial Interest in the historical-artistic complex of Aranjuez. From now on, it will welcome URJC students, professors, researchers and service and administration staff in its new classrooms. Its rehabilitation marks a milestone in the important work of recovery and preservation of historical heritage.
