The collaborative Open Data portal specialized in the Higher Education sector, Universidata, of which the URJC is a promoter, has opened the call for its first competition for data reuse projects.

The objectives of I 'Datathon' are to promote the content offered by the portal, in order to maximize its reuse. Likewise, making contact with the participants with the goal of better understanding their objectives, their needs and the barriers they encounter when making use of the data in UniversityDATA. All this with the goal of being able to guide the future steps of the platform.

Through this award, we want to recognize the talent and value contribution of reusers, to promote, through example and the dissemination of reference cases, a higher level of use of published data.

The call for this contest is now open and will run until October 14. Any open data processing project that meets the following requirements may be submitted: the work must involve the reuse of one or more of the data sets published in UniversityDATA, without excluding the possibility of using secondary information from other sources. In addition, the use that the project makes of the portal data should not be secondary or accessory, but central to the results obtained.

There will be a first phase and in it 10 works will be selected that will go on to the final. The definitive list of winners will be published on December 16, 2022.

The results of the project must have a well-defined utility for specific recipients. Generic data processing without a clear objective or utility will not be accepted.

No limitations are set on the nature of the treatment, the technologies involved, or the format of the results. You can compete with a mobile App, a web application, a data analysis in Jupyter or R-Markdown, etc.

The contest allows participation in other events. You can compete with a work that has already been presented in other contexts.

Those responsible for Universidata will establish a direct communication channel with the participants through which doubts and questions related to the data sets that may arise during the development of the projects can be raised.

Leading role of the URJC

The prizes will be 2.000 euros for the winning project, 1.000 euros for the second and 500 for the third. The possibility of organizing the award comes after the fact that Universidata, led by the URJC, through Universidata-LAB, won the 'III' Desafío Aporta, which allowed the network win a prize of 4.000 euros with which this I 'Datathon' is organized. Among the members of the jury of experts is the head of the URJC's Office of Free Knowledge and Culture, Jesús Barahona.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Rey Juan Carlos University, which, as promoter of Universidata, is the main convening entity.

According to Raúl Ramírez Ruiz, academic director of Transparency and Good Government, this award has “a cardinal importance for the URJC since it is part of the Universidata initiative in which the URJC was a pioneer. Through an agreement with Dimetrical we have been able to generate a network of universities that constitutes a project with important national and international repercussions due to its novelty”.

An opportunity to breathe new life into data that holds great informative and public service value.
