The Madrid Speedcubing Association together with the support of the Rey Juan Carlos University have organized an official competition related to Rubik's cube and backed by the International Cube Association. It will take place next Saturday and people of all ages can participate.

This initiative comes from the president of the Madrid Speedcubing Association and ESCET student, Iván Brigidano, together with Sofía Guerrero Neto, vice president of the same association, and Andrea Magro Canas, an experienced competitor and former student of the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

“Rubik's cube is something completely unknown to students. It is an unprecedented activity at the university and we are looking forward to the day when we can compete” explains Alexander Gil, URJC Deputy Vice Chancellor for Sports. "This competition is very important, apart from the fact that very important people are going to come to it, it is the first competition of the year in the Community of Madrid, and it will be held at our university." “I would dare to say that national records will be broken” adds Iván Brigidano.

The double degree student in Chemical Engineering and Energy Engineering, and who has accumulated more than forty competitions, explains that his passion for the Rubik's cube began in 2015 when he was given his first cube in a shopping center. “There was a guy there doing an exhibition on how to solve the Rubik's cube, he interested me and I followed him on his YouTube channel to see his tutorials. From then on I began to compete, now we are very close friends”, declares Brigidano.

The competitions are structured in eleven categories in which several cubes are framed: 6x6x6, 3x3x3 Less Movements, Pyraminx, Skewb, 4x4x4 Cube... Competitors participate in them and are classified according to the times until they reach the final. The one hundred participants, aged between 10 and 50, will be eligible for a 3D printed trophy, a medal, and a diploma. In the competition, which is attended by people of various nationalities, there will be no age distinction and it will be mixed.

“I would like to highlight that the initiative comes from the students themselves. They have been the ones who have taken the helm and the university has been of support to open the doors that are not so accessible” points out Pilar Martínez, deputy director of communication and promotion of the ESCET. "Both the ESCET Management and the sports service have coordinated to carry out this activity and make it clear that the URJC has a firm commitment to this type of initiative."
