January 2023 has been, at the Rey Juan Carlos University, the month of the teaching methodology called Flipped Classroom. The Office of the Vice President for Teacher Training and Teaching Innovation has organized three seminars on this teaching methodology on the Móstoles, Fuenlabrada and Madrid campuses.

The seminars, lasting three hours, have had four speakers, who have explained to their classmates the way in which they apply the Flipped Classroom in their subjects.

The Vice Chancellor for Teacher Training and Teaching Innovation, Antonio Julio López Galisteo, comments that the idea behind these seminars is for teachers to share their know-how in active methodologies, and for the seminars to be thematic, that is, to address the application of the methodology in the different degrees of each campus, since said application can vary from one field of knowledge to another. “We did not want to invite great experts in active methodologies, quite the opposite. Our goal is for teachers who have not yet applied them to see that colleagues who have been doing so for a short time, that their implementation in the classroom is feasible”, he pointed out.

The Flipped Classroom methodology, broadly speaking, proposes that students study and prepare the contents outside of class (looking for information, and documenting themselves on a topic or matter proposed by the teaching staff) and share in the classroom, with different activities ,.

The vice-rector added that “we are very satisfied with the reception that the seminars have had among the teachers of our university. 140 teachers have been trained in the Flipped Classroom during the month of January”. The degree of satisfaction of the attendees is very high, valuing the organization of the seminars with 4,6 out of 5 points, and the presentations with an average evaluation of 4,5 out of 5 points.

More activities in February and March

From the Office of the Vice President, the predisposition of teachers to increase their training in teaching methodologies that help students to better acquire their skills is verified. Proof of this are the three sessions in the month of February, dedicated to the methodologies of Project-Based Learning and Practical Cases. On the Madrid campus, all 50 places were sold out in just 1 hour, and currently the seminar on the Móstoles campus already has all 80 places sold out, while on the Alcorcón campus there are only 20 places left out of the 80 for the seminar.

The month of March will be the month of the active methodology based on Gamification and Serious Games at the URJC. Three activities will be held again, this time on the Móstoles, Fuenlabrada and Madrid campuses. All the information on these seminars can be found in the Innovation Newsletter number 4

Antonio López Galisteo, has indicated that "these courses are a good complement to the training actions in innovative methodologies of the Permanent Training Plan of the PDI, as well as to the self-training Guides that are included in the URJC Teaching Innovation Portal. "

One more example of the URJC's firm commitment to educational innovation.
