The role of women in armed conflicts is the focus of a URJC congress

Under the direction of teachers Vicente Garrido Rebolledo and Lucía Mantecón Díaz, the conference will be structured into four panels that will address various topics related to gender and security. Featured topics include; the sexual violence suffered by women in conflicts, the role of women in peacebuilding and disarmament processes or the Women, Peace and Security Agenda itself.

According to Lucía Mantecón, professor in the Area of ​​Public International Law and International Relations, “within the security narratives the objective was to go a little outside the traditional approach and dedicate a day to gender and security, analyze the role of women in armed conflicts and the gender perspective in security and defense.”

The sponsorship of NATO's Public Diplomacy Division has been essential for the realization of this event. In addition, it will be carried out in a hybrid way, with live streaming to allow students from the universities that are part of the EULiST Alliance to follow it live.

The collaboration between the URJC and NATO allows “to show the link between academia and security and defense, through speakers specialized in each topic. It can also help students when making contact with an organization like NATO that is not usually available to Madrid students,” said the URJC teacher.

The congress, which has already registered 220 registrations, will have the participation not only of prominent speakers from the national territory, but also with the collaboration of researchers from the 'Istituto Affari Internazionali' of Rome.

Among the authorities who will be present are the Secretary General of Defense Policy, the Admiral, Juan Francisco Martínez Núñez, the director of the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE), GB Francisco José Dacoba Cerviño, and the Ambassador on Special Mission for Politics Feminist Exterior, María Jesús Conde Zabala.
