The university athletes have had some good Spanish University Championships, winning a total of 15 metals in different disciplines in the competitions that have been held throughout the country in the last two months.
As Pedro Ramos, Director of Sports at the URJC, explains, “it is a pretty good balance in a championship with a very high level of competition, with private universities that are dedicated to sport, even professionally.”
Two golds in Judo
The most successful sport in these championships has been Judo. In this discipline, the Rey Juan Carlos University has achieved two golds. On the one hand, in the Men's -100 Kg categories (Aharón Santamaría, who will attend the European Championships in July in Miskolc, Hungary).
The other gold came in the -90 Kgs Male category (Gonzalo Piedrabuena). Furthermore, and without leaving this sport, in the women's category, the URJC athletes have won silver in -48 kg (María Rojas) and -78 kg (Ana Vizoso).
Also in contact sports, in this case in Taekwondo, another silver came, -58kg Men (Domingo Sánchez).
In Athletics, in this case the best results are provided by the athletes with silver in Pole (Diana Jiménez) and Hammer (Belén Bermejo). Likewise, the URJC has also won silver in Orientation (Alvaro García)
Women's Basketball and Futsal, silver
The teams of these two sports have been runners-up in Spanish university competitions, confirming in both sports a track record of success and the high level of women's team sports at the URJC.
The Women's Futsal team has already been champion of Madrid, Spain and Europe, this year, although they have been runners-up in Spain, they will return to the European Championships this year. As Pedro Ramos indicates, “we have been first and second in Madrid, Spain and Europe for a long time. This year we return to the continental championships. It is a very solid team, players are leaving and others who are known from the federated leagues are entering.”
For its part, the women's basketball team had been achieving success in Madrid for years, but it was in 2024 that it managed to become runner-up in Spain, “after a very hard-fought match,” says Ramos.
Bronze in Taekwondo and Athletics
In addition to the silver already mentioned, the URJC taekwondo fighters won bronze in all the categories of the discipline in which the university presented a candidacy: -46kg (Laura García), -62kg (Paula Pizarroso) and -57kg (Yadira Reimúndez).
The URJC also took the third place on the podium in the women's 400 hurdles (Aleksandra Wruszak) and the Men's Hammer (Juan Jiménez).
For the rest, the fourth place of the Men's 3x3 Basketball team, the fifth position of the boys' Basketball team and the ninth position of the girls' 3x3 Basketball team also stands out.
Results that demonstrate the URJC's commitment to sport. In this sense, the university will have a pavilion on the Fuenlabrada campus in the 25/26 academic year and next year it will have a new rugby field in Alcorcón as well as renovated facilities on the different campuses.
A global commitment that is reflected in the Sports Promotion Plan and that, as proven by the results obtained in the Spanish University Championships, bears fruit.
