On December 12th, a secure bicycle parking area will be inaugurated on the Rey Juan Carlos University campus in Fuenlabrada and a basic workshop on bicycle repair will be held. The event has been organized by the Green Office, headed by Consuelo Iriarte, and has had the collaboration of the University Social Responsibility Unit (RSU).

This closed bicycle parking is permanently monitored by security cameras and is accessed with the digital university card available at the URJC app, with each entry recorded, which offers greater security to the user. In addition, it has lockers with a plug to charge the batteries of electric scooters and store objects, such as helmets.

Luis Giménez Benavides, academic director of the RSU, explains the reasons why it was decided to build this facility: “We have common bicycle parking spaces spread across all the campuses, but one concern we detected in the meetings preparing the mobility plan was a certain feeling of insecurity due to some robberies that had occurred from time to time.”

On the other hand, the introductory bicycle repair workshop aims to teach how to do maintenance and simple repairs to “get the bike ready, and so that this is not an excuse not to use it” says Benavides. The main skills that will be taught will be: cleaning and lubrication, adjusting gears and brakes, repairing punctures and broken chains, and introduction to hydraulic brakes. It should be noted that, as part of the mobility plan, bicycle self-repair devices were installed last year on all campuses, for basic emergency solutions.

The event will be recognized as 0 ECTS credits and attendees will be able to register from this moment on. link.
