Science is used to generate certainties and answer questions. This has been the objective of the professor of the Fuenlabrada School of Engineering (EIF), Julio Ramiro, and his students, to provide scientific evidence on the electromagnetic waves emitted by devices such as mobile phones or microwaves.
This initiative was carried out at the end of January and was possible thanks to the collaboration between the Rey Juan Carlos University and the Department for the Elderly of the Fuenlabrada City Council.
The project was carried out in the senior centres of Loranca and Ferrer i Guardia. There, students of the subject of electromagnetic fields held two sessions, one per centre, which were very well attended.
“They gave a simple presentation on waves and radiation, but it was constantly enlivened by experiments measuring the waves emitted by different devices or the electromagnetic fields present in the rooms where the session was held,” explains Julio Ramiro, who added that “the students placed a lot of emphasis on the waves received from mobile phones.”
According to Julio Ramiro, “the elderly have really appreciated these sessions and seeing such well-prepared young people.”
For the participating students, it has allowed them to deepen their knowledge acquired in the classroom and work on communicating these concepts.
Julio Ramiro has been planning similar activities for several years within the framework of Science Week or Researchers' Night. The professor explains that the objective of these initiatives is "to try to provide a scientific basis for something that many people talk about and that generates uncertainty in older people. We provide scientific-based foundations when measuring and presenting values."
A project that has allowed the University to fulfil its role as a real social service, demonstrating that in the classrooms of the URJC people are trained to solve the present and future problems of society.
