Around 1.300 students from 21 committees have debated current international issues at the Rey Juan Carlos University's Model United Nations.

Once again, politics and international relations have been the main themes of the Móstoles campus for a week. Students from all areas of knowledge, although mostly from Political Science, International Relations and Law, have come together for a record-breaking Model United Nations, which has had some 1.300 participants.

A total of 21 committees have been the scene of lively debates. In addition, this year there has been a new committee, “the historical committee, which we have dedicated to the Balkan Wars. The students who have participated in this forum have done so as historical figures of the conflicts (leaders such as Slobodan Milosevic, Ali Izetbegovic, Franjo Tudman, Ratko Mladic or the Secretary General of the United Nations at the time, Butros Gali, among others)”, says Jorge Blázquez, a 4th year Criminology student and director of Coordination of the URJC MUN 2025. This young man has added that “the participants in this committee have had to do a lot of research to be able to represent these characters in a conflict of which we already know the resolution”.

Also as a major novelty of this edition, the URJC MUN 2025 has had the presence of an expert in international security with more than 25 years of experience within NATO, Gerlinde Miehus, who addressed NATO's perspective in a world in turmoil.

As regards the committees, the most popular topics that generated the most debate were those related to Human Rights, Security (especially the relationship between organised crime and terrorist financing), Equality and Economy, both in its macroeconomic aspect and by analysing new economic figures such as cryptocurrencies and their role in the development of nations.

Very satisfied

The URJC MUN 25 has been a success, “we are very happy because we have grown in delegations and the press team has also increased, we have had 18 reporters during the model, creating content every day of the event.” In addition, Jorge Blázquez points out, “this year people have been very happy from the first day. As the weather has been on our side, all the social events have been able to take place perfectly. The academic spaces have worked very well and all the outdoor activities as well, people have enjoyed it a lot,” he explains.

An experience that Jorge Blázquez encourages all students to participate in. “From the outside, MUN seems to focus on International Relations and Political Science, but that is not the case. The idea is that every student has a role in MUN. There are many places to participate: committees, staff, press. URJC MUN provides a lot of skills (soft skills) such as debate, argumentation and negotiation, which are positive for all students, both at university and in their future professional careers.”

An event that has already become a reference in the world of Model United Nations and is an integral part of the URJC brand.
