The joint programme aims to facilitate access to physical exercise programmes for patients in the Breast Unit throughout the different phases of cancer treatment, free of charge. With an initial duration of two years, this pioneering initiative aims to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families, promoting an ethical and sustainable approach.

Today the comprehensive physical exercise program to support patients undergoing cancer treatment within the Breast Unit, developed by the Sports Sciences Research Center (CIDE) from the King Juan Carlos University and the Health Research Institute of the San Carlos Clinical Hospital, In collaboration with the GO fit LAB.

This initiative focuses on the integration of physical exercise as a fundamental tool in the treatment and care of cancer patients and their families.

This project will be supported by the Scientific Foundation of the AECC through a scholarship (AECC Chairs Program 2024) aimed at improving the humanization of cancer patients and their support team, which materialized in an event held on February 13.

Normalize an active and healthy life during and after cancer treatment

This multidisciplinary project seeks to improve cancer prevention and care by implementing a personalized exercise program (free for participants) in the routine clinical practice of women with breast cancer. For an initial period of two years, patients will be able to access different exercise options based on the most recent scientific evidence, and healthcare professionals will receive specialized training in this field.

The program includes analysis of physiological adaptations to exercise, strategies to promote patient adherence, and practical activities with patients and family members. In addition, clinical impact assessments will be conducted and educational materials will be generated for healthcare professionals, patients, and family members, promoting sustainable implementation.

The support of a team of experts

The program has been designed collaboratively by a group of highly qualified researchers, with Dr. María Herrera de la Muela, Coordinator of the Breast Pathology Unit of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of HCSC, leading the clinical team of the Health Research Institute of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, and with Dr. Alfonso Jiménez, Echegaray Professor, director of the Center for Research in Sports Sciences at URJC, and Principal Investigator of the GO fit LAB, leading the exercise intervention team. The multidisciplinary team includes doctors Blanca González Palomares, Miriam De la Puente Yague, Ana Belén Paterna Rivas, Ana M. Lavín Pérez, and Inés Nieto Romero, and doctors Daniel Collado Mateo and Xián Mayo Mauriz, who share a common commitment to improving health by promoting physical activity and structured exercise in clinical populations, especially oncology patients.

A transformative vision for cancer care

Thanks to the support of GO fit, both from its Research Unit, the GO fit LAB, and from the entire operations area of ​​the company, this initiative represents a key step towards demonstrating that physical exercise can be a transformative tool in improving the quality of life of cancer patients and their families.
