Professor of the Fuenlabrada School of Engineering and delegate of the Rector of the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC), Antonio García Marqués, has been awarded the IEEE Signal Processing Society award for the best scientific article for his publication 'Convolutional Neural Networks Architectures for Signals Supported on Graphs' (IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 2019).
This work, carried out in collaboration with researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the Technical University of Delft, presents a general framework for the design of deep learning architectures on graphs (data structures). The study shows that several existing architectures were specific cases within a broader family, also revealing important connections with classical filtering and sampling algorithms. These contributions have been exploited in subsequent research, consolidating the value and applicability of this approach.
The award-winning research was carried out as part of a project funded by the State Research Agency (AEI), in which, in addition to the universities of Pennsylvania and Delft, the University of Minnesota, the University of Rochester and Rice University also participated.
“The next few years are going to be fascinating. The increase in computational capacity, access to large volumes of data and advances in algorithm design open up a range of possibilities that until recently were unthinkable, and thinking that we can make our small contribution to this revolution is fantastic,” says Professor Marqués.
The award winner also points out that “this work would not have been possible without the institutional and financial support of the AEI and the URJC and, above all, without the collaboration of a group of people who exude intelligence, work capacity and empathy.”
The award will be presented in Hyderabad, India, in April, during the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, a meeting that will bring together more than 5.000 researchers from around the world who are experts in signal processing and machine learning.
The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the world's largest professional technical organization, with nearly half a million members. They include world leaders in areas such as communications, electronics, aerospace engineering, control, intelligent systems, signal processing and machine learning.
