The Olympics are organised by Team Europe and this year they included a simulation of the European Parliament, in which students became MEPs, having to defend the positions of the different political groups represented in this Parliament. The debate on sustainability allowed students to experience the practice of decision-making in the Union.
The event was opened by the Vice-Rector for International Relations, María Luisa Humanes, who underlined the University's commitment to European values, particularly through teaching, research and information transfer activities within the EULiST alliance of universities of which it is a member.
The lecturers in the area of History of Law and Institutions, Julio Guinea, and MEP Adrián Vázquez, then spoke. Both highlighted the importance of young people getting involved in issues related to the European Union.
Those who qualify in the regional phase of these Olympics will go on to the final phase, which will be held in Asturias from 4 to 6 April. The three best centres will travel to Brussels to visit the European Parliament.
