In a world of rapid change and increasingly polarized public opinion, journalism faces significant challenges, such as the use of artificial intelligence, biases, and hidden agendas that threaten freedom of information. The summer course 'Democracy, Culture and Media', organized by the Rey Juan Carlos University on June 24 and 25, brings together a large group of specialists to address the threats looming over the media ecosystem.
Among the guests are journalists Jesús Maraña, Isaías Lafuente, and Ignacio Escolar, who will participate in various roundtable discussions. Cultural critic Eduardo Galán, co-creator of Mongolia Magazine, will discuss disinformation alongside influencer and comedian Penny JayG. The finale will be a meeting between singers Miguel Ríos and Miguel Poveda to discuss the role of culture as a counterweight to hate speech and disinformation.
Ríos, who participated in the last edition of the summer courses, is one of the most recognized and admired voices on the Spanish music scene, to which he has dedicated more than six decades. His love of rock has always been accompanied by a strong commitment to the defense of freedom and human rights. Poveda, for his part, is one of the undisputed figures of contemporary flamenco. His music has transcended stylistic boundaries to explore genres as diverse as poetry, copla, and bolero. Throughout his career, he has been nominated five times for the Latin Grammy Awards and has received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts.
The course, which will be held at the Aranjuez campus, is free and is recognized with 0,65 ECTS credits. The university will award 10 scholarships for accommodation and meals, which can be requested upon registration. The last day to register is June 11.
