Access and admission

Program Admission Criteria

Students will be prioritized according to the criteria specified below. The admission criteria and procedures for part-time students will be the same as those for full-time students. To be admitted, it will be necessary to obtain at least 50 points as a result of adding the scores of all the criteria.

Criterion 1. Academic record (up to 70 points). The score will result from multiplying the average in base 10 by 7.

  • The average mark of the academic record will be calculated taking into account all the studies carried out to complete the requirements for access to doctoral studies, including all the credits or subjects passed, not only those required.

The average grade for the bachelor's degree or equivalent degree (which we will denote by X_1, in base 10) and the average grade for the master's degree (which we will denote by X_2, in base 10), both with two decimal places, will be calculated separately. In each case, the number of credits for each subject will be multiplied by the grade obtained, and then the sum of the products of all the subjects will be divided by the total sum of the credits.

The final average grade will be obtained (also with two decimal places) as the average weighted by the number of credits between the average grade obtained in the degree and the average grade obtained in the master's degree. That is, it will be the result of (X_1*G + X_2*M)/(G+M) where G denotes the number of credits completed in the Degree, and M denotes the number of credits completed in the Master.

  • In the case of students who have not completed master's studies, but have taken doctoral courses in endangered programs regulated by Royal Decree 778/98 of April 30, and who have obtained the DEA title (Diploma of Advanced Studies), A grade equivalent to the master's average will be obtained from the grades from said doctoral courses.
  • The average marks of the titles obtained in teachings taken at two or more universities must contain all the subjects and credits passed, with the corresponding score. The validated subjects will have the equivalence in points corresponding to the qualification obtained in the center of origin; For the adapted subjects, the grade obtained in the center of origin will be calculated and the recognition of credits in which there is no grade or that correspond to training activities not integrated into the study plan will not be taken into account for the purposes of calculating the average grade. , in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 1044/2003, of August 1, and Royal Decree 1125/2003, of September 5.
  • In the case of studies carried out partially or totally in foreign university systems adapted to the EHEA, the average mark will be made on all the studies of Degree or equivalent qualification. In the event that the number of credits of the Degree is less than 240 ECTS credits, the average mark will be made on said studies plus all the credits passed in the master's degree, which must be a minimum of 300 credits in the set of both studies.
  • In the case of studies carried out partially or totally in foreign university systems not adapted to the EHEA, the average mark will be made on all the studies completed to obtain the degree, applying the equivalences corresponding to the organization of Spanish university education.
  • In the case of the average marks of studies carried out abroad, whether they were approved or not, the provisions of the Resolution of July 16, 2008, of the General Directorate of Universities, which establishes the criteria to apply for the calculation of the average grade of the academic records of students with an approved foreign degree.

Criterion 2. Knowledge of English language (up to 15 points). The maximum score can be obtained by accrediting having level C1, higher, or also, if the student's mother tongue is English, or if he has completed his university studies in said language. Up to 10 points can be obtained when certifying a B2 level and up to 5 points when certifying a B1 level of the foreign language indicated above. In all cases, the accreditation of the foreign language level will be done by presenting an official certificate.

Criterion 3. Up to 15 additional points may be obtained for the following merits: Scientific production of the candidate (authorship of publications or scientific-technical documents, participation in congresses), Erasmus, SICUE-Seneca or similar stays, specialization courses received outside of official university education, and previous professional experience related to the topic of the doctoral program.

Up to two letters of recommendation written by university professors, researchers and, exceptionally, professionals who have had a relationship with the candidate and have participated in their academic or professional training may also be taken into account. The Academic Committee may enter into direct communication with the authors of said references in order to gather more information about the candidate. In no case will merits taken into account in the previous sections be valued in this section.

On a voluntary basis, the presentation of a letter of motivation is recommended in which the line of research that is intended to be developed during the doctorate is indicated, the reasons for this choice, the scientific objectives pursued and if there is a guarantor director.

  • In the case of students, this report is sent to the coordination of the corresponding degree, and from there it is sent to the teachers responsible for the subjects in which the student is enrolled.

Training complements

Students who have not completed a Master's in Epidemiology or Public Health must take additional training.

To do this, they must enroll in the Open Classroom or Open Postgraduate Program in the corresponding subjects of the Master of Epidemiology and Public Health that offer the UAM and UAH in their Public Health Departments.

Based on the student's file, the Academic Committee will determine the subjects to be taken by the doctoral student, which will mainly consist of:

  • Training in Statistics: Applied Statistics.
  • Training in Epidemiology: Epidemiological Method.

If the Academic Commission detects any other deficiency in the student's file, it may request the completion of any other subject of the aforementioned master's degrees.

Organization of programs

PRESENTATION

This programme has emerged in an ideal scientific, academic and social context. In terms of the scientific context, epidemiology is a consolidated scientific discipline, whose contributions are published in the best biomedical journals in the world. In fact, epidemiology is the basic science of clinical research and public health. In addition, proposals have been made to use epidemiological methods in the control of social problems outside the health field, such as criminal justice and the fight against terrorism, improving the quality of education, failures in the sports field, or the environmental challenges of the future (Epidemiology - a science for the people. Lancet 2013, 381:1249-51). This has been accompanied by its recognition with its own area of evaluation by ANECA, a specific CIBER for Epidemiology and Public Health, and a Strategic Action for Health Research (with annual funding of more than 60 million euros) focused on research with a predominantly epidemiological approach. In fact, epidemiology and public health have a long tradition of multi-professional collaboration (with experimental laboratory scientists, economists, engineers, social scientists, etc.). All of this makes this PhD programme interesting for health science professionals and also for professionals from many other areas of social relevance.

In terms of the academic context, departments of epidemiology and public health are part of medical schools in all countries and also have postgraduate faculties (Schools of Public Health) in the most prestigious academic institutions in the world. This is a reflection of the maturation of this discipline and the recognition of it by academic institutions.

In terms of the social context, there is one aspect of enormous relevance at this time. Epidemiology has provided a conceptual framework for understanding the processes that generate the economic crisis (the crisis is generated and spreads like an "epidemic disease") and is showing which are the most effective policies to alleviate the effect of the crisis on the health of the population (Financial crisis, austerity, and health in Europe. Lancet 2013;381:1323-31). In addition, public health has formulated strategies for the reduction of socioeconomic inequalities with an impact on health, which are the type of policies that, by improving the health of the population, contribute to the prosperity of nations (The unequal health of Europeans: successes and failures of policies. Lancet 2013: 381:1125-34). These types of policies are at the heart of the responses to the economic crisis, which is accompanied by an increase in socioeconomic inequalities between countries (WHO European review of social determinants of health and the health divide. Lancet 2012;380:1011-29). All of this places graduates of our program in an optimal position to contribute effectively, through epidemiological research and public health action, to the collective efforts needed to alleviate the effects of the crisis and accelerate the exit from it.

The participating institutions offer society the training of professionals in different areas of health sciences, such as degrees in Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Physical Activity and Sports Sciences. The progress of research in Health Sciences, as well as the quality of the training received by graduate students, has led them to continue their undergraduate studies with Master's and Doctorate studies, in an effort to contribute to the scientific research of our society. To date, the participating institutions have offered an adequate number of University Master's degrees, with a high degree of acceptance by students graduating from the University itself, as well as from other Spanish universities. At the present time, and in accordance with Royal Decree 99/2011 of January 28, the participating institutions, given the high number of students enrolled in Master's programs, feel committed and obliged to qualify the offer of postgraduate studies in the field of Health Sciences.

In the field of Health Sciences, public health is one of the priority areas. This doctoral programme strengthens the training capacities in public health research that currently exist, because it incorporates a large number of research groups from the three public universities in Madrid with training in this area of knowledge. This doctoral programme will be the only one in the Community of Madrid in this area of research. Furthermore, due to the number and quality of the participating research groups and the number of partner institutions, it will be the benchmark doctoral programme in epidemiology and public health in Spain. Therefore, it will be a focus of attraction for good Spanish and foreign students.

This competence will be achieved when the PhD student has defended a research paper at a conference not organised by the University of Alcalá and when he or she has carried out some activity to disseminate his or her field of research. The dissemination activity may be one-off (a conference open to the public or the development of an activity presented within the framework of Science Week or similar) or sustained over time (creation of a dissemination blog on aspects related to his or her area of research). There may be similar activities, such as participation in dissemination journals, etc., which may be taken into account by the Director or the tutor to consider this competence achieved.

CB16. Ability to promote, in academic and professional contexts, scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural progress within a knowledge-based society.

This competence will be considered achieved if one of the following circumstances occurs: A publication by the doctoral student, related to his/her doctoral thesis, is cited by external researchers; the doctoral student participates in obtaining a patent; the doctoral student actively participates in an R&D&I contract under Article 83 of the LOU; any other event that shows that the work carried out by the doctoral student is useful for another group, whether research or business.

PERSONAL CAPABILITIES AND SKILLS

CA01. Operate in contexts where there is little specific information.

Together with CB11, the evaluation of this capacity will be carried out by the Director at the time when the doctoral student completes the part of his/her thesis in which he/she describes the current situation of his/her line of research (State of the Art), and has his/her approval.

CA02. Find the key questions that need to be answered to solve a complex problem.

Together with CB14, this capacity will be considered to have been achieved by the Thesis Director at the time when the description of the working hypotheses of the Doctoral thesis is completed, as well as the objectives pursued with it.

CA03. Design, create, develop and undertake novel and innovative projects in their field of knowledge.

Together with CB12, this ability may be assessed as acquired by the Director or the Tutor, when the PhD student has actively participated in the preparation of a research project proposal with competitive funding. Likewise, this competence may be considered to have been acquired if the PhD student participates actively and substantially in the preparation of a proposal for an external entity that has been concluded in the form of an R&D&I contract under Article 83 of the LOU. Likewise, it may be achieved if the PhD student actively participates in the creation of a technology-based company related to his/her field of research.

CA04. Work both in a team and independently in an international or multidisciplinary context.

This capacity will be considered to have been achieved if the PhD candidate undertakes a stay of at least 3 months in a public or private research centre outside the University of Alcalá. Likewise, participation in publicly funded projects, provided that in the activities in which he or she has collaborated he or she has done so with several people, may be considered to consider this capacity as having been achieved.

CA05. Integrate knowledge, deal with complexity and make judgments with limited information.

Together with CB13, this capacity is demonstrated when the Thesis Director considers that the research developed by the doctoral student can be considered concluded and that he/she is in a position to reflect it in his/her Doctoral Thesis thesis in order to proceed with its defense.

CA06. Criticism and intellectual defense of solutions.

This ability will be considered to have been obtained when the doctoral candidate has been able to successfully engage in public debates about his or her research work, in the opinion of the tutor or director. These debates may take place, among others, in the question phase after an oral presentation at a conference, defending a poster in a specific session, or after participating in a round table discussion related to his or her research topic.

ASSIGNMENT OF THE TUTOR AND THE DIRECTOR BY THE ACADEMIC COMMITTEE

Once admitted to the Doctoral Program, the corresponding Academic Committee will assign each doctoral student a Doctoral Tutor with proven research experience, linked to the Doctoral School that organizes the Program.

The Academic Committee, after hearing the doctoral candidate, may modify the appointment of the doctoral candidate's Tutor at any time during the period of completion of the doctoral degree, provided that there are justified reasons.

Once admitted, the Academic Committee responsible for the Programme will assign each PhD candidate a Thesis Director who may or may not be the same as the Tutor referred to in the previous section. This assignment may be given to any Spanish or foreign doctor with proven research experience, regardless of the university, centre or institution in which he or she provides his or her services.

The thesis may be co-supervised by other doctors when there are academic reasons, such as the case of thematic interdisciplinarity or programs developed in national or international collaboration, with prior authorization from the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program. This authorization may be revoked later if, in the opinion of the Academic Committee, the co-supervision does not benefit the development of the thesis. In the event that the participation of three or more co-supervisors is considered, authorization must be requested from the Steering Committee of the Doctoral School.

The Academic Committee, after hearing from the doctoral candidate, may modify the appointment of the Thesis Director at any time during the period of completion of the doctorate, provided that there are justified reasons.

CROSS-CUTTING ACTIVITIES

In view of the basic and general competencies, the Rey Juan Carlos University will develop a series of training activities coordinated by the Doctoral School, in collaboration with the program coordinators.

They will be valid for all programs. They will normally be organized by the Doctoral School, although initiatives active in different departments may be used.

These activities aim to develop some of the personal skills and abilities described in RD 99/2011. In any case, these activities will not be the only way to achieve these skills: the personal work of the doctoral student, under the direction of his/her Director and Tutor, will also serve to achieve this.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PRESENTING THE DOCTORAL THESIS

The processing and defense of the Doctoral Thesis may be carried out from the third academic year onwards. Within this period, the student must have obtained a positive evaluation of the academic courses and authorization to defend the Doctoral Thesis.

Once the doctoral candidate has completed the preparation of the Doctoral Thesis, he or she will present it for approval, together with the favorable report of the Thesis Director or Directors, to the Academic Committee of each Program.

The thesis may be presented in monograph format or as a compendium of publications.

THESIS IN MONOGRAPH FORMAT

In order to defend the PhD Thesis in the Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences, in monograph format, the PhD candidate must have published an article related to the work carried out in a scientific journal. The journal must appear in the Journal Citation Reports. The Academic Committee will assess any possible exception to this rule.

THESIS BY COMPENDIUM OF ARTICLES

A doctoral thesis may be completed by compiling the doctoral candidate's articles in prestigious publications. The minimum number of articles will be three. The thesis must include, in addition to the articles, a broad summary that gives coherence to the research as a whole, showing the line of argument of the same, as well as a chapter of conclusions. Two of the articles will be included in the Q1 or Q2 quartiles.

The Doctoral Program in Health Sciences accepts the submission of doctoral theses by compendium of articles with the considerations included in the following points:

1 Doctoral Theses by compendium will be based on a number of three articles published (or accepted for publication) after the date of enrollment in the Doctoral Program.

2 The PhD candidate must be the first author (or justify his/her main authorship) of at least two of the included articles. The other co-authors of each article must give their explicit consent for the article to form part of a Doctoral Thesis by compendium of articles.

3 Two of the three articles must be among the first two quartiles of the scientific area of the publication.

The Academic Committee will evaluate any possible exception to this regulation.

MATERIAL RESOURCES AND SERVICES

All participating institutions have libraries with textbooks and journals specialising in Epidemiology and Public Health, both in paper and online (specifically, they have access to: American Journal of Epidemiology, Epidemiology, International Journal of Epidemiology, European Journal of Epidemiology, Annals of Epidemiology, Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, American Journal of Public Health, European Journal of Public Health, Social Science and Medicine, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Medical Care, etc.). All of them have access systems to databases (PubMed, Embasse, Web of Knowledge, Cochrane Library, etc.) available to doctoral students. In addition, all institutions have computers with Internet access and space available for doctoral students. Students have access to the Internet both in their work areas and in the library. They have computer programs for data analysis (SPSS, STATA, R, Epidat and Epiinfo). Most of the groups participating in the Program have active, well-funded research projects, which have a section for researcher assistance to scientific conferences and exchanges with foreign countries.

ASSOCIATES

The programme is the result of the collaboration of the universities of Alcalá, Autonomous University of Madrid and Rey Juan Carlos University with a Public Research Organisation (OPI) such as the Carlos III Health Institute. The collaboration agreements are attached. The programme also collaborates with the CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health (Consortium for research excellence in the area of epidemiology and public health), particularly to organise the mobility of doctoral students.

The research groups integrated into the programme develop collaborative projects with numerous groups of excellence in some of the best academic institutions in the world, including Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, University College in London, NIH in the United States of America, Utrecht University in the Netherlands, Erasmus University in the Netherlands, Karolisnka Institute in Sweden, and dozens of other institutions. These collaborations are accredited through collaborative research projects, joint publications, doctoral theses with European or international mention and thesis committees with members of foreign universities within the groups participating in the programme. This wide network of international collaborative activity represents a high degree of internationalisation of the doctoral programme.

Renewal of accreditation

The renewal of the accreditation represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official Bachelor's and Master's degrees registered in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT). The renewal of the accreditation of official bachelor's and master's degrees is organized in three phases: self-assessment report, external visit and final assessment.

In the first phase, the university describes and assesses the status of the degree with respect to the established criteria and guidelines. The result is the Self-Assessment Report (IA) that is presented. The second and third phases are carried out by a group of evaluators external to the evaluated title.”
