What knowledge will I acquire with this Master?

The Master's in International Journalism aims to meet the demand for new professional experts in International Journalism, trained to integrate into a professional content creation environment in the field of international multimedia and digital relations.

The Master in International Journalism is also justified by scientific and academic issues. On the one hand, the Master will have sensitivity and as a central focus cross-cutting issues that from the science of international relations have been studied late and in detail from the journalistic angle. That is, the area of ​​international cultural relations, from the angle of cultural diversity and interculturality, and the commitment to human rights.

This context highlights the need for specialized training to meet the demand for new professionals in the sector, especially in innovative areas such as Journalism with a focus on Human Rights, International Solutions Journalism, International Data Journalism and Global Journalism. . This demand will constitute a specialization in the Journalism and International Relations degrees that are currently part of the study plans offered by the Rey Juan Carlos University. This need can be detected by the great demand for double degrees in Journalism with other degrees such as International Relations, Economics, Law and Political Science. Specifically with International Relations, the coverage rate in the 2015-16 academic year was 120,00%, with which we can justify the great interest in combining both studies.

On the other hand, international digital communication is changing substantially, which is affecting the demand for new international professional profiles who are capable of taking on the challenge of using the internet and social networks in a professionally ethical manner. Following the data of the Annual Report of the Journalistic Profession (2016), this Master's objective is to train future journalists in the area of ​​international relations with the profiles of community manager, international digital content manager, data journalist and data visualizer. international.

The adaptation of the new international sources means adapting to the technologies of generation, presentation and distribution of content, which entails a new interpretation of international events with the use of new communication tools that address the new processes of generation and verification of sources of information. various kind; from official documents, diplomats, to news cables, think tanks, etc. Therefore, it implies offering knowledge of new specialized capacities based on the continuous adaptation required by the information market.

Criteria and procedure for admission to the degree

The general requirements for access to University Master's Degrees are, according to article 18 of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28, which establishes the organization of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality, the following:

  1. Possession of an official Spanish Graduate or Graduate university degree or equivalent is a condition for accessing a Master's Degree, or, where appropriate, having another University Master's degree, or titles of the same level as the Spanish Bachelor's or Master's degree issued by universities and higher education institutions in an EHEA country that in that country allow access to Master's degrees.
  2. In the same way, people in possession of titles from educational systems that are not part of the EHEA, which are equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, will be able to access a Master's Degree in the Spanish university system, without the need for homologation of the title, but verification by of the university of the level of training that they imply, as long as in the country where said title was issued it allows access to university postgraduate level studies. In no case will access through this route imply the homologation of the previous degree held by the person concerned or its recognition for other purposes than that of carrying out the Master's degree.
  3. Universities will guarantee transparent and accessible information on admission procedures, and must have student orientation systems. Likewise, they will ensure that said information and admission procedures take into account students with disabilities or with specific needs, and will have appropriate support and advice services.
  4. Universities may exceptionally establish, based on specific regulations approved by their governing bodies, conditional enrollment procedures for access to a University Master's Degree. This will consist of allowing a Bachelor's degree student who has yet to pass the TFG and a maximum of up to 9 ECTS credits, to be able to access and enroll in a University Master's Degree, although in no case will they be able to obtain the Master's degree if they have not previously has obtained the Bachelor's degree. Universities will guarantee priority in the enrollment of students who have the official university degree of Graduate or Graduate. In this procedure, credits pending recognition or transfer in the Bachelor's degree may be taken into account, or the requirement to exceed a certain level of knowledge of a foreign language to obtain the degree.
  5. Universities or centers will regulate admission to Master's Degree courses, establishing specific requirements and, if necessary, training complements, whose credit load may not exceed the equivalent of 20 percent of the credit load of the degree. The training complement credits will have the same consideration as the rest of the credits in the University Master's degree curriculum.
  6. Universities will reserve at least 5 percent of the places offered in official university Master's degrees for students who have a recognized degree of disability equal to or greater than 33 percent, as well as for students with permanent educational support needs. associated with personal circumstances of disability, who in their previous studies have required resources and support for their full educational inclusion.

ADMISSION

The Rey Juan Carlos University does not have specific admission regulations, but is governed by article 18 of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28. Each degree has its own general access criteria and special access tests.

Admission to the University Master's Degrees will be carried out through a selection process; In some cases, this process may involve a selection test. The Master's Management will inform interested parties what the selection test will consist of, as well as the exact date and place of completion through this application and by means of a notice via email.

Rey Juan Carlos University, aware of the important change that entering university represents for first-time students, has implemented various systems of support and guidance for students once they have enrolled:

2.- Mentoring Program: The Mentoring Program (or peer tutoring) at the Rey Juan Carlos University arises as a support for the tutoring action developed by the Comprehensive Group Tutors. With Mentoring, university students are given participation in the management of the system. It is the students themselves in the final years of their degree who, as Mentors, collaborate with the Tutors to welcome, integrate, guide and direct the first year students of their same degree.

The inclusion of mentors in the Program is a benefit for the students being tutored, especially for new students, since the mentors will show them the University, help them resolve their initial doubts and improve their performance. In addition, the mentors will support the tutors, making their management easier.

3.- The Graduates Office: aims to establish a strategy to monitor graduates of the Rey Juan Carlos University, which aims to strengthen relationships with our graduates and develop a more active link, offering them advantages and benefits in all activities and services generated by the Graduates Office and the University in general.

The Graduates Office has a Strategic Plan for Employment and Entrepreneurship in charge of designing actions and programs that promote the comprehensive development of its graduates and favor and facilitate their insertion into the labor market. The aforementioned Plan basically covers four specific strategic axes of action and professional interest:

The Strategic Plan for Employment and Entrepreneurship is aimed at graduates of the last three years and its main objective is to establish permanent links in the productive sector of the national and international economy, which will allow us to meet the needs of placement and professional development of our graduates, as well as the demand for qualified people and professionals required by companies.

They can access the job placement service, job bank, call for scholarships, information and training for employment, guidance and advice for self-employment and entrepreneurship, processing of the graduate card, data updating, general information on outstanding graduates, international mobility, graduate search, professional networks and other matters of professional and work interest. Special attention is paid to the labour insertion of people with disabilities, for which there is a specific space on employment and disability. 4.- Unit for the Care of People with Disabilities

Since 2005, the Rey Juan Carlos University has incorporated the Disability Care Unit (UAD), which aims to offer support, advice and assistance in matters of social and labour integration to those members of the university community who have any functional diversity as a result of a disability. The UAD is aimed at the three groups that make up the University: Teaching Staff, Administration and Service Personnel, and Students, the latter being the largest group and therefore the one towards which most actions are directed.

The actions of the UAD are regulated by the URJC's own regulations approved by the Governing Council and were included in the University Statutes in order to clarify the commitment made by the governing team towards achieving the general objectives of educational inclusion and normalization of disability in university classrooms, guaranteeing equal opportunities in the academic life of students or in the performance of their jobs for workers with disabilities.

Once all the areas described above have been addressed, the URJC, in its commitment to people with disabilities, wants to go even deeper into its actions, setting the objective of promoting employability, access to the labour market and permanence in it.

The management of the Master's program, for its part, sends information by mail with an orientation kit about the university, library, administration, etc.; as well as communication through social networks about the start of the course.

SPECIAL ACCESS CONDITIONS OR TESTS:

The body responsible for the admission process is the management of the Master's Degree. The criteria for assessing merits include: the evaluation of the student's CV, taking into account his or her professional experience, his or her projection in relation to the objectives of the Master's Degree, as well as the adequacy of his or her academic training through his or her academic record.

Also, in the event that student demand exceeds the supply required to complete the Master's degree, the Curriculum Vitae that includes academic training at an undergraduate or postgraduate level appropriate to the entry profiles of the Master's degree (50%), professional experience (25%) and languages ​​(25%) will be taken into account for selection.

Training Complements

The Master's Degree will offer the following additional training courses for new students who do not come from degrees related to Journalism, Communication and International Relations, that is, from degrees such as Political Science and Administration, Law, Sociology and History, which do not include subjects related to journalism or communication. These additional training courses consist of the following four subjects of 3 ECTS, each with 75 teaching hours: Fundamentals of journalism in the framework of international relations and International journalistic processes and relations with the media.

Offer of places: 50 seats. If the minimum number of students envisaged is not reached in a course, the University may choose not to open the teaching group.

External Internships

The External Practices subject is a curricular subject whose main objective is to promote a comprehensive training of the student through the practical application of the knowledge acquired during the Master's degree, which facilitates direct contact with the professional activity and the opportunity to join the professional world with a minimum of experience. All practices are designed so that the students who participate in them acquire professional experience in real situations and conditions, applying the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are acquired in the training processes throughout the degree. The internships represent a decisive opportunity for the personal development and professional future of the students.

Internships are activities carried out by the student in companies, institutions and organizations; that is, in centers outside the university premises, which aim to enrich and complement their university education, while providing them with a deeper knowledge about the skills they will need in the future.

The External Practices subject will consist of two phases.

First. Completion of the internship period that offers professional experience related to any of the profiles that are expressed in the Verification Report of the degree.

Mobility programs

University Master's degrees, due to their duration and characteristics, in general do not specifically contemplate the mobility of their students. However, the Rey Juan Carlos University has different mobility programs for both students and University workers (PDI and PAS) and has procedures for collecting and analyzing information on these mobility programs.   • Article 6.1.2. The favorable resolution of the request for total cancellation of registration does not necessarily imply the refund of the amount paid by the student. To do this, the requirements established in the Article 10.3 of the present regulations.
  • Article 11.3.  The extension of the period of permanence will be requested through the procedure established for this purpose by the Rey Juan Carlos University in the electronic office, within the established period. The Rector may authorize the continuation of studies in those cases in which exceptional causes, duly documented, have affected the academic performance of the students., valid for that academic year (up to a maximum of one year)
  • Article 11.4.  In accordance with what is established by the Article 4 of these regulations, those students whose request to remain is resolved favorably will have to enroll in all the remaining subjects to complete their studies.
  • Article 11.5.  For subjects with an indefinite call, once the extension of the permanence period is granted, the fees corresponding to the second and successive registrations will be paid according to the corresponding Public Price Decree as long as they have been previously enrolled in that subject.
  • Article 12.4.  Once this is granted, the student must enroll in accordance with the provisions of the Article 4 of the present regulations.
  • Article 12.5.  For subjects with an indefinite call, once continuity in the University Master's studies is granted, the fees corresponding to the second and successive registrations will be paid according to the corresponding Public Price Decree as long as they have been previously enrolled in that subject.

The renewal of the accreditation represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official Bachelor's and Master's degrees registered in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT).
