Its objective is for the student to acquire advanced methodological training that covers the epidemiological, biostatistical and clinical aspects, as well as all the stages of the research process: from the initial stage, with the development of a research project, to the end, with the written and oral dissemination of the results through the usual scientific channels. The works that will lead to the presentation of the Doctoral Thesis will be carried out in the different research areas led by the professors participating in the program.

The focus of the line of Clinical and Epidemiological Research in Health Sciences is aimed at providing knowledge and experience to train researchers capable of dealing with health problems and their determinants from the perspective of the population, focusing on the translational nature of research in present. Researchers with the ability to understand, interpret, analyze and explain the phenomena related to community health and well-being in today's societies, from a holistic and prospective orientation, and with the ability to intervene and provide interdisciplinary responses that take into account the principles of equity, ethical action and responsibility.

Basic Research in Biomedicine.

Coordinator: Prof. Raquel Hernanz Martín (CV

In this line of research, the aim is for the student to acquire fundamental knowledge about Basic Biomedical Research, including the main research methodologies and techniques, as well as the necessary skills to be able to develop and design experimental approaches, which lead to progress in knowledge of the processes (molecular, cellular and physiological) involved in both the maintenance and deterioration of health, including possible therapeutic strategies and their mechanisms. Thus, the contents will be structured in:

  • Experimental models (cellular and animal)
  • Methodologies (cell biology and histology, biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, pharmacology, systems biology and omics analysis)
  • Experimental designs.

In this line of research, special attention will be paid to the models and methodologies that are developed associated with the projects that are carried out in the Faculty of Health Sciences, where there are lines of work related to various aspects related to the metabolic syndrome ( insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia), aging, cancer, Alzheimer's, assessment of different preserving solutions in heart transplantation and stem cells in post-heart attack regeneration

Pain Research.

Coordinator: Prof. María Rocío Girón Moreno ()  CV

Within the doctoral program in Health Sciences, the line of study and treatment of pain has been included due to the already long tradition of our university in this field.

The research group that directs its activity to the study of the mechanisms responsible for pain, the search for possible therapeutic targets and the development of new drugs with analgesic activity has directed the first university degrees focused on pain, first a doctorate, taught since the year 2001 with a Quality Mention from the Community of Madrid and the Ministry of Education), then an inter-university postgraduate training program, which included the master's degree for the study and treatment of pain, which continues to be taught.

These activities have received different awards, among which the one awarded by the Spanish Society of Pain to the University stands out for its involvement and training trajectory in the field of Pain.

With this background, this line of research offers the possibility of obtaining a doctorate focused on the field of pain, which can be attractive for any of the branches of biomedicine since our training capacity, both basic and clinical, is well proven and the of professors and collaborators is very wide.

Finally, our contacts with international research centers are sufficiently consolidated to guarantee the possibility of achieving International Doctorates.

Psychology.

Coordinator: Prof. Andrés Losada Baltar (CV

This line offers the possibility of carrying out both fundamental and applied research focused on the psychological and social dimension of health and well-being in different contexts. This includes the admission of doctoral thesis proposals from the different areas of knowledge integrated in the Department of Psychology: Clinical, Social, Psychobiology, Educational, Basic and Methodology, as well as others that, in combination with any of the above, adopt a interdisciplinary approach.

Among the topics addressed by the ongoing research projects are the following: endogenous modulation, stress and self-regulation processes in functional pain syndromes; emotional regulation and occupational health; emotional regulation and life cycle, pain in older people; early retirement and welfare processes; diversity management in organizations; flexibility, composition and effectiveness of work teams; Evidence-based psychological interventions, psychological intervention in dementia and family, neural indices of cognitive, affective and social processes, psychophysiological and neuroimaging techniques in chronic pain, psychosocial variables of adolescent development, and experience sampling methods and ICTs applied to sciences of health, psychological variables in health processes, gender and health.

Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine.

Coordinator: Prof. D. Ricardo Ortega Santiago
