Its objective is for the student to acquire advanced methodological training that covers the epidemiological, biostatistical and clinical aspects, as well as all stages of the research process: from the initial stage, with the development of a research project, to the end, with the written and oral dissemination of the results through the usual scientific channels. The work that will lead to the presentation of the Doctoral Thesis will be carried out in the different research areas led by the professors participating in the program.
The focus of the line of Clinical and Epidemiological Research in Health Sciences is aimed at providing knowledge and experience to train researchers capable of dealing with health problems and their determinants from the perspective of the population, focusing on the translational nature of research in present. Researchers with the ability to understand, interpret, analyze and explain the phenomena related to community health and well-being in today's societies, from a holistic and prospective orientation, and with the ability to intervene and provide interdisciplinary responses that take into account the principles of equity, ethical action and responsibility.
Basic Research in Biomedicine.
Coordinator: Prof. Raquel Hernanz Martín () CV
In this line of research, it is intended that the student acquires fundamental knowledge about Basic research in Biomedicine, including the main research methodologies and techniques as well as the necessary skills to be able to develop and design experimental approaches, which lead to the progress of knowledge of the processes. basics (molecular, cellular and physiological) involved in both the maintenance and deterioration of health, including possible therapeutic strategies and their mechanisms. Thus, the contents will be structured into:
- Experimental models (cellular and animal)
- Methodologies (cell biology and histology, biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, pharmacology, systems biology and omics analysis)
- Experimental designs.
In this line of research, special attention will be paid to the models and methodologies that are developed associated with the projects that are carried out in the Faculty of Health Sciences, where there are lines of work related to various aspects related to the metabolic syndrome ( insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia), aging, cancer, Alzheimer's, assessment of different preserving solutions in heart transplantation and stem cells in post-heart attack regeneration
Pain Research.
Coordinator: Prof. María Rocío Girón Moreno () CV
Within the doctoral program in Health Sciences, the line of study and treatment of pain has been included due to the already long tradition of our university in this field.
The research group that directs its activity to the study of the mechanisms responsible for pain, the search for possible therapeutic targets and the development of new drugs with analgesic activity has directed the first university degrees focused on pain, first a doctorate, taught since the year 2001 with a Quality Mention from the Community of Madrid and the Ministry of Education), then an inter-university postgraduate training program, which included the master's degree for the study and treatment of pain, which continues to be taught.
These activities have received different awards, among which the one awarded by the Spanish Society of Pain to the University stands out for its involvement and training trajectory in the field of Pain.
With this background, this line of research offers the possibility of obtaining a doctorate focused on the field of pain, which can be attractive for any of the branches of biomedicine since our training capacity, both basic and clinical, is well proven and the of professors and collaborators is very wide.
Finally, our contacts with international research centers are sufficiently consolidated to guarantee the possibility of achieving International Doctorates.
Psychology.
Coordinator: Prof. Andrés Losada Baltar () CV
This line offers the possibility of carrying out both fundamental and applied research focused on the psychological and social dimension of health and well-being in different contexts. This includes the admission of doctoral thesis proposals from the different areas of knowledge integrated in the Department of Psychology: Clinical, Social, Psychobiology, Educational, Basic and Methodology, as well as others that, in combination with any of the above, adopt a interdisciplinary approach.
Among the topics addressed by the ongoing research projects are the following: endogenous modulation, stress and self-regulation processes in functional pain syndromes; emotional regulation and occupational health; emotional regulation and life cycle, pain in older people; early retirement and welfare processes; diversity management in organizations; flexibility, composition and effectiveness of work teams; Evidence-based psychological interventions, psychological intervention in dementia and family, neural indices of cognitive, affective and social processes, psychophysiological and neuroimaging techniques in chronic pain, psychosocial variables of adolescent development, and experience sampling methods and ICTs applied to sciences of health, psychological variables in health processes, gender and health.
Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine.
Coordinator: Prof. D. Ricardo Ortega Santiago
Coordinator: Prof. Ms. Nuria Máximo Bocanegra
In this line of research, the student will acquire the knowledge and skills related to research in the areas of knowledge of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine. Therefore, research work related to the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, pathologies, disorders and other health-disease conditions will be of interest and, therefore, aimed at related health professionals (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, doctors, among others).
The objective is for the student to acquire advanced methodological training related to Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, in all possible stages of the life cycle: from the pediatric stage to old age, whether through a quantitative approach. , qualitative or mixed.
The works, which will lead to the presentation of the Doctoral Thesis, will be directed by teaching and research staff participating in the program, and who have extensive clinical, teaching, research and management experience. Proof of this are the numerous research projects, indexed scientific publications, awards received and networks of contacts with hospital and socio-health centers with which the teaching staff is currently linked.
As a reference, the research groups of the Department of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine recognized by the Rey Juan Carlos University are listed: High performance research group in Manual Therapy, Dry Puncture and Therapeutic Exercise; Consolidated research group Movement Analysis, Biomechanics, Ergonomics and Motor Control Laboratory; Consolidated research group in Humanities and qualitative research in Health Sciences; Consolidated research group in Evaluation and Assessment of Capacity, functionality and disability

The need for doctoral training for graduates in degrees related to Health Sciences is defended both in the academic and professional spheres, where the need to continue researching and advancing in knowledge, techniques and methods is confirmed, and this training doctoral is the main way of training researchers.
The Rey Juan Carlos University proposes the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences, to provide and offer doctoral training that contributes, on the one hand, to promoting the training of people with competence in research and innovation in Health Sciences, and on the other another, to advance, through research, in response to the needs of society within the framework of an integrating program, whose structure and organization allow both specialization, updating and diversification of training, research and transfer in the field of Health Sciences.
Within the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences, the different lines of research will be developed, in accordance with the requirements established in the current legislation and in the regulations of the URJC, contrasting the experience and research proficiency, and the existence of competitive projects. . The line to which the doctoral student will be assigned will be determined by the access requirements and the subject of the thesis project. Each line of research, in turn, will define, without exclusion, the main topics for the development of the doctoral theses, based on the existing groups and the research experience of the assigned tutors and directors.
The Rey Juan Carlos University proposes with this Doctorate Program:
- Train new researchers and prepare teams that contribute to social, scientific and economic progress.
- Promote the training of new teachers in related disciplines.
- Specialize postgraduates who are interested in their adequate professional, scientific and technical development.
- Promote the creation of research groups and networks, nationally and internationally, and interdisciplinarity.
Objectives
The general objectives of the Doctoral Program of the Rey Juan Carlos University will be, at least the following:
- Encourage and deepen knowledge and professional, scientific and technical development of doctoral students in the field in question.
- Train new researchers capable of joining research teams.
