Physiotherapy improves the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's and reduces morbidity

From the Professional College of Physiotherapists of the Community of Madrid we receive the statements of Professor Roberto Cano de la Cuerda, doctor from the Rey Juan Carlos University, full professor of the Department of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, exposes, on the occasion of World Parkinson's Day, that improvements have been found in gait reeducation (fundamentally in step length, gait speed and resistance to fatigue), in functional mobility and balance, as well as in the degree of functional involvement of the patients, without the presence of identified adverse effects derived from the Physiotherapy intervention.

Dr. Cano affirms that “The treatment of Physiotherapy should start as soon as possible, although in the moderate and severe stages of the disease the treatment must be carried out by physiotherapists specialized in dealing with the parkinson's".

He also states that the public system does a “great job in caring for patients with Parkinson's. However, referral rates for people with Parkinson's to Physiotherapy have been historically low, due to a weak scientific base in the past and poor availability of Physiotherapy services. Therefore, public services should promote Physiotherapy care for these patients”.
