The rapid growth of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes is a major challenge in nephrology. These entities are deeply interrelated. In fact, obesity and the metabolic syndrome frequently precede diabetes. In addition, overweight, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, prediabetes, and diabetes are risk factors for kidney disease. Obesity itself can cause specific kidney disease, such as obesity-related glomerulopathy, or increase the risk of kidney disease progression, regardless of the underlying cause. The pathways involved in kidney disease associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes are not fully understood.
Renal lipotoxicity and inflammation are important areas of research and could be involved in kidney damage in these metabolic complications. Evidence from animal models may help understand kidney disease in these conditions. Likewise, recent evidence on the cardiovascular and renal protection of specific diets and new medications seems to offer promising alternatives for patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. All these issues will be discussed at the new DIABESITY meeting, an ERA-EDTA working group, to be held at the Alcorcón Campus between November 14 and 16.
