Informative day on the 'New European Bauhaus' (NEB) initiative to improve the quality of life in Europe through architecture

The Conference was inaugurated by the Rector of the URJC Mr. Javier Ramos and by the Director of the EIF Mr. Javier Simó, and the event was closed by Ms. Nuria Matarredona Desantes, General Director of Urban Agenda and Architecture of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.

The event aims to raise awareness among the URJC university community of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative presented by the president of the European Commission, Úrsula Von der Leyen, in 2020. Through this project, the aim is to promote the architectural and its value in improving the quality of life of citizens of the European Union, focusing on three key concepts: Beauty, Sustainability and Inclusion.


The first presentation was given by Marcos Ros Sempere, architect and MEP in the European Parliament for the S&D group. In order to continue carrying out her dissemination work throughout Europe and Spain of the NEB initiative, Ros Sempere has explained the objectives of the NEB; "The New Bauhaus is a paradigm shift to face the new environmental transition, we want to improve people's health as the original Bauhaus did."

It has been an intense day for students to learn about the methods of the NEB initiative, as well as the works and projects carried out by the women who studied at that School of the Avant-garde during the first half of the XNUMXth century. The Conference has served to make students aware of the ethical and aesthetic criteria disseminated by this current, through awarded works in recent architectural competitions.

With the aim of disseminating this style from different areas, figures such as David Juárez, architect of the Straddle 3 collective, and winner of the New European Bauhaus 2021 award, have attended the event. An award he earned for the construction of social housing made with the recycling of containers. .

The meeting also featured the intervention of Luis Palacios, an architect who recently received the New Bauhaus Award from the Higher Council of Architects of Spain (CSCAE) for his Wildgarten Quartier Wien project.

The architect and author of the book 'The Women of the Bauhaus. From the two-dimensional to the total space', Josenia Hervás y Heras, also participated in the event, highlighting the role of women in the NEB, "women were essential in the original Bauhaus, without them it would not have been the same."

At the end of the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to talk with the speakers, who were completely willing to discuss the different questions that were raised.

The person in charge of closing the event was Nuria Matderrona, general director of Urban Agenda and Architecture of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.

The event was well attended, exceeding the capacity of the main hall of the URJC Campus in Fuenlabrada.
