Maldita.es opens a space to teach how to dismantle false news

'La Buloteca' was born to verify hoaxes and provide tools to learn to verify doubtful information

The journalistic project Maldita.es, which has been fighting disinformation and hoaxes for several years, has launched this week 'The Buloteca', an online space in which they will collect all the hoaxes, false news or doubtful information that have already been previously verified. The objective of this 'buloteca' is to make tools available to the entire society "so that people know what is real, help us verify what is a lie, learn to distinguish a hoax and can even teach how to fight disinformation", they assure from their website.

This space will have the collaboration of citizens to report hoaxes and help the Maldita.es team in the investigations, providing data to dismantle the most specific false information.

The buloteca arises in a year in which Spain will hold four types of elections: general, municipal, regional in thirteen autonomous and European communities.

This space will also include manuals, techniques and courses that the members of Maldita.es teach so that anyone can contribute to dismantling false information, and learn to distinguish it from real news. Soon they will include other techniques and games to educate on the importance of fighting disinformation.

This initiative is part of one of the four branches of Damn.es: Damn Newspaper Library, Damn Hoax, Damn Science and Damn Data. They are mainly responsible for monitoring political discourse and information circulating on social networks and analyzing the message by applying data journalism techniques for verification. On their website, they make tools and manuals available to the public to apply their verification techniques anywhere and at any time.

Maldita.es has been awarded with the José Manuel Porquet Prize for Journalism in 2015 and was a finalist for the European Press Prize 2016 and 2017. Since June 2017, he has been part of the International Fact Checking Network as signatories of its Code of Principles and is the only media outlet participating in the High Level Group on 'fake news' and disinformation appointed by the European Commission in 2018.
