Gabriel Santamarina, journalism student, "journalism is just another job, but you live brutal experiences"

Written by Daniel De La Fuente Casillas

Gabriel Santamarina Tomé is a Journalism student at the Rey Juan Carlos University and his passion for RC Celta de Vigo led him to create a Podcast about the team.

Gabriel began as a member of FC Barcelona but after leaving his homeland, Vigo, he began to miss his true origins and "Celta de Vigo became my link with home". "It's a way of being able to feel your home while being outside of it," confesses Gabriel.

Thanks to this reason, Gabriel had the idea of creating a solo podcast. A podcast that he began as “chronicles of matches that he published on Spotify”. Little by little he began to have more listeners thanks to the interview he conducted with a Twitter user who belonged to "the Celta de Vigo community."

In the season following the creation of the Podcast, Gabriel explains that he received the request to continue with the program together with another person. It is at this moment that Gabriel points out that the Podcast begins to be "completely different", since the program became live on the twitch platform, under the name "You Had To Have Thrown". In addition, the programs after their completion are published on YouTube for later viewing.

Currently, the project initiated solely by Gabriel has the presence of eight collaborators, in addition to two video editors and an image editor. The programs also have guest sections.

Despite putting all his enthusiasm into the program about the football club, Gabriel assures that his intention is not to dedicate himself to sports journalism. "Sports journalism is very sacrificed and you have to live for and for it."

Finally, Gabriel confesses that what he expects from his work in the journalistic world is that he be "valued and recognized" in an environment where he feels comfortable with himself.
