Award for the first experience that introduces Animal Assisted Therapy in Pediatric ICUs in Spain.

'The Best Ideas of 2019' that drives Medical Journal to recognize the work of professionals, institutions and companies that contribute to the improvement of medicine and health care, has distinguished 'Footprints of Colors' as best program of the year in the RSC category, socially responsible initiatives related to the field of health.

 

'Footprints of Colors' is the pioneering project promoted by the Animals and Society Chair of the URJC adjacent to October 12 Hospital y PsychoAnimal which incorporates the Interventions with Animals as a way to humanize intensive careand control pain of critical pediatric patients with non-pharmacological measures.

'Footprints of Colors' has found that interaction with dogs markedly reduces pain levels —up to three points according to the usual scales of measurement of this variableanxiety and fear of children admitted to the pediatric ICU of the Hospital October 12. The program also makes the environment friendlier for patients, their families and even ICU professionals.

The positive of the pilot phase and the acceptance by the medical team and families —9.71 points out of 10 in the satisfaction survey—, have led to the indefinite continuation of the program 'Huellas de Colores', thanks to funding from dingonature y MSD Animal Health.

Prizes 'The Best Ideas 2019' of Diario Médico they delivered the November 25th in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona.

Medical JournalEditorial Unit, is a reference medium in health information aimed at doctors of all specialties.

'Footprints of Colors' received last June first prize of the Albert Jovell Awards 2019 in the category Initiative that improves patient health outcomes. The Albert Jovell Awards distinguish projects that place the patient at the center of the health system.

About the Institutional Chair Animals and Society of the Rey Juan Carlos University

La Institutional Chair of Animal Research and Society of the Rey Juan Carlos University nace in 2016 to investigate, train and disseminate the effects of the bond between humans and animals. Animal welfare and health promotion with animals as mediators (animal-assisted interventions) are the subject of this chair and disciplines incorporated very recently into the European university environment. The A&S Chair, located in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the URJC and directed by Dr. Nuria Máximo Bocanegra, is the first of these characteristics in a Spanish public university.
