Periodic table women psychologists

Posted by Francisco Molina Rueda

On the occasion of the XIX Week of Science and Innovation, the Periodic Table of Women Psychologists has been prepared with psychology students.

Thanks to the initiative carried out by professors Dau García Dauder, Helena Thomas Currás, Vanesa Pérez Torres and Miguel Ángel López Sáez, the students have investigated the contributions of 86 women in the fields of Clinical and Health Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Education, Social Psychology and Organizations and Experimental and Basic Psychology.

The activity has sought to participate in the celebration of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in honor of the 150th anniversary of its first publication) and make visible the contributions of women in the discipline. , since on many occasions they do not appear in the text manuals.

Previous reviews, such as that of Professor Mª del Carmen Giménez of the University of Barcelona, have been indicating the low visibility of women psychologists. Thus, the most used manual in the Spanish universities of History of Psychology, only mentions 6 psychologists. This lack of visibility does not correspond to reality. It is not a matter of the absence of female psychologists, but of forgetfulness, as a consequence of sexism in its history. The activity organized during Science Week attempts to compensate for this discrimination, which has consequences for the students' role models.

Currently the Table will be exhibited in Lecture Hall II on the ground floor. It is an interactive Table in which the public can learn about the main contributions of these psychologists.

This note has been written by the members of the proposal.
